AFL Folds 2 Franchises

Arena Football League folds franchises in Las Vegas, New Orleans, reducing league to 10 teams

LAS VEGAS — The Arena Football League has folded franchises in Las Vegas and New Orleans.

A league announcement Sunday says the Las Vegas Outlaws and New Orleans VooDoo organizations had ceased operations immediately. The decision leaves the league with 10 teams.

shame

What a joke anyway, but dare to dream for a handful of these guys I guess.

I know hardly anything about the league at all other than somehow watching probably 10 minutes total worth of play in randomly flipping cable channels over the last 25 years or so.

And so because it’s late and the game is over and there not much on really, I did a bit of research.

Apparently there were 4 divisions for only 12 teams, but now there are 10 teams. How odd.

Of those 10 remaining teams, apparently an amazing 5 of them have been around for at least 20 years!

I used to live in the Tampa Bay area until July, which is home to the Tampa Bay Storm and is the oldest remaining franchise in arena football.

In five years there, I knew of not one person who was a fan or who even went to a game.

But I guess someone is going to games there in Tampa and in Orlando, Cleveland, San Jose, and Arizona.

This league is a huge feeder to the CFL... Don't knock it too hard.. At one time it used to steal our players away. Those days are long over now. Its decline can only be be beatin by Indycar. It's hard to believe that just ten years ago this league was nationally televised over the air and had over 20 teams with average player salaries of almost 100K... Now it has no presence and player salaries of 10K.

With over 50 defunct teams.. It's amazing the teams that have hung on..To call the AFL a marginal business would be a huge understatement.. This chart is very similar to what the Indycar ex team graph looks like since Tony George destroyed the sport in 1996

I am with you on Indy Car though also Roger Penske had his hands in that schism from which it never recovered. NASCAR has filled much of the void since due to vastly superior marketing for outside of its core base in the American South. I remember those times well also years later when the Indy 500, which I grew up with here in Indianapolis in the first half of my life, was just no longer near as big of a deal for television viewing as otherwise it always sells out for spectators.

For the Arena Football League, marginal would be gracious. Deficient would be more accurate.

Hey Paulo.. check this out!! If one side starts before the other, just pause it until the other side starts.. It is so clear here which form of racing is superior. Yet the inferior form of racing gets 6 times as many TV viewers.. Despite what the repective crowds in these videos show, generally Nascar destroys Indycar in attendance too... I find it amazing that people I never even knew the old Cart series like my mother knew the nakes of Paul Tracy and Micheal Andretti. Tony George should be ashamed of himself... As for Penske, he stayed with the good guys until 2002 when his sponsors told him to switch.. I guess Penske created the original split back in 79, but the sport grew into a billion dollar business by 1995.. It would make an amazing movie to explain how Tony George whos father was killed by him Moms boyfriend (something crazy like that anyways) tryed to make his father`s legacy proud and completley detroyed the sport in the process.. It would be a great movie, but would flop terriblly at the box office because no one gives a damm about Indycar anymore.... The amazing part of this video is that the cars were quite a bit faster 20 years ago.

Tampa is actually the remaining original franchise, they were the Pittsburgh Gladiators from 1987-1990 before moving down to Tampa

And then there was 9

Which team is the new one that was drop-kicked from the league?

The shock have moved to a profitable league that does not pay to have its games in ESPN
