If there ever was a reason to institute challenges on PI, then this play is the exact reason for it. How that could not be called, I have no idea at all.
Like I said before who called down to have them change the call, Vegas, Tv execs. or Jerry Jones? Either way makes NFL look like a BUSH League!!! BUSH BUSH BUSH!!!!
They let the hold on the jersey at the line go, they let the hold on the right arm go, they let the contact go and they let the player come off the sideline without his helmet argue the call !
Wonder what it cost JJ ?
you are mixing two issues up. My point in starting this thread and in my latest post was to defend cfl refs by pointing out similar problems with NFL. I don’t apologize for refs, but I do defend them. CFL refs are simply not the worst, yet neither are NFL refs. They are human and are reffing the hardest game in the world to ref. So many rules, so many exceptions, so many different things going on at once. Much more than in any other sport I know of.
NOw, replay officials and so forth, they should do a better job of getting it right sometimes, but the on field refs do, for the most part, a great job in difficult circumstances.
I'm thinking some of you on this thread need to get in touch with your local minor football organization and volunteer to officiate some Pee Wee and Atom games. You know, put on the stripes and the whistle, give the rule book a quick review and actually get on a real football field in the middle of a real game.
Given you're all such experts, and officiating football is so easy, they'd be more than pleased to get some help from people of your calibre. Just an idea.
Then, after four or five hundred games of experience over a decade of work in all sorts of weather, your rants would have a small shred of credibility.
Well said.
Maybe the NFL should bring back the Division 2 college refs to wake some critics up.
Sure, players and coaches can make mistakes, but referees? Apparently not.
Well they had the call right first, then they screwed it up by picking up flag.
To those that think the CFL officials suck, why don't you join your local Football Officials Association and take part in the training. You will then have the opportunity to officiate some local games.
After a year or two on the field, then comment on the officiating.
Two officials said they saw the play. One (back judge?) saw contact and threw a flag. The other (head linesman) saw no contact, just face guarding (which is apparently legal in the NFL - who knew?), so didn’t throw a flag. The referee announced the penalty before hearing from both officials (mistake #1), and then after talking to them, decided that the head linesman had a better view of the play (mistake #2), so went with that official’s non-call. The referee did not make the call; he just decided which official to believe based on their positions on the field.
Too bad for the Lions that PI challenges aren’t allowed in the NFL. This may be the play that changes that.
