A penalty Question

Is there still a Penalty when a player removes his helmet when he is still on the field?

Good question. I don’t know. I know it’s illegal participation if it involuntarily comes off during the play (I think).

Article 2 – Helmets
A player is required to wear a helmet when on the Field of Play and shall not
voluntarily remove it while the play is in progress.
PENALTY: L10 PBD
NOTE: If a ball carriers helmet comes off, the play shall be blown dead
immediately.

Which I take to mean any time the clock is running. If there is a stoppage I believe you can take it off, but you have to have it on and the chinstrap properly fastened before play resumes.

I have seen many players take their helmets off as they run to the sidelines so I am thinking that this is no longer a penalty.

The intent of the rule was to stop people taking off their helmets while arguing calls, getting into scrums, and in some cases even throwing them.

So from that perspective they really don’t call it anymore but every once in a while you see it happen and wonder what happened to the rule.

Same with the simulating a flag motion.

In minor football you have to keep your helmets on when you’re on the field.

There is a penalty for it but most officials will tell the players to keep the helmets on.

It seems any penalty after the play is called as being a misconduct penalty. Very seldom will the ref say what caused the misconduct. Was it for removing your helmet, making a flag throwing motion when you think a penalty should have been called, roughing after the play? It would be nice if they say something like “Misconduct penalty for unnecessary roughness.”

hey bot:

Under the current Canadian Football League (CFL) rules, players can indeed be penalized for taking off their helmets while on the field. According to the CFL Rulebook:

  1. Helmet Requirement: “A player shall be required to wear a helmet when on the Field of Play and shall not voluntarily remove it while the play is in progress.” The penalty for this infraction is labeled as “L10 PBD” CFLdb.

  2. Objectionable Conduct: Removing a helmet after a play while remaining on the field is considered objectionable conduct and can lead to penalties as well CFLdb.

These rules are in place to maintain safety standards and ensure the smooth conduct of the game.

I thought they brought it in in the first place because players were wanting to get their face on TV and it was starting to get out of hand.

I actually remember (at least I think this is accurate) that the rule was brought in because some player removed their helmet and used it to hit another player. The intent was to limit the use of the helmet in altercations as a weapon.

More than once and at least one time hit the official

On Oct. 3, 2003, Calgary Stampeders Linebacker Otis Floyd and Hamilton center Carl Coulter began fighting when play had stopped, throwing punches and grabbing each other by the facemask. Floyd kicked at Coulter before finally ripping his helmet off. Floyd then tossed it, striking the line judge.

I noticed during the Seatle game last night one player walking off the field was really wanting to take his off but didn’t until he stepped across the sideline

what the penalty for taking jock strap off

Funny in that their adoption of the rule followed the CFL, as did having you chinstrap on.
I bet there is a change in that rule soon.

I would make the “helmet comes off during play” - unless you can demonstrate parts failure - a three play exclusion.
