a non-bonehead assessment of the argo game

-Maas played great, despite his poor decision to throw that last interception

-Holmes looks awesome

-the O-Line played well, giving Maas time to throw and Holmes holes to run through

-Paopao's offense is very creative and fun to watch

-the ball was spread out to lots of receivers. If Peterson and Flick can't get open more, they should ride the bench in favour of Cavil and Quinnie

-the D-Line needs to get more consistent pressure on the QB (Wynn never would have been as effective as he was if he was consistently running for his life)

-again, more blitzes from the LB's would have helped

-we did a good job stopping the run through most of the game

-our guys in the secondary have to cover better, but remember: the Argos have all-star receivers

-yes, Yeast should immediately run forward on kick returns instead of dancing around, but he's a great player with lots of talent who should not be cut

-the Ticats will learn from their mistakes, gel more, and win more games than they lose this year (I predict we'll go undefeated at Ivor Wynne and win at least 4 games on the road too). Toronto has a championship-calibre team, and we could have beat them. We are a lot better than we were last year, and it will come together.

The Argos have All -Star DB's ,Ivory ;Stieneur who are better paid then our DB's,oh ya they stole them from us...hmmmm ....new commish needed who isn't in Torontos back pocket?

How do you know how often Flick wasnt open? He looked open to me often yet the plays always seemed to be going to Holmes, Vaughn or NOBODY.

Have to disagree with your assessment here, dont bench your most outstanding player from 05 because Maas decided not to throw the ball to him.

Jason Maas wound himself up too tight
wanting to do well for his new team
in his first game with us.

It really showed on that goal-line pick
which proved to be the gamebreaker
late in the fourth quarter of the game.

He just has to get settled down.

I am encouraged that the cold hard facts
show little difference between the 2 teams.

Why doesn’t the CFL website show the penalties?

Another key turning point, as my son pointed out, was the second down drop by Yeast over the middle, forcing us to turn it over.

Here we go again. NEVER makes a clutch catch.

BTW, what a catch by Ralph, who IMO should be starting over Yeast.

Yeast had an okay night returning other than his first one where he got a little bit of happy feet going on.... after that he was fine.

as for Ticatsackattack's first comment about Maas, i think his second INT was excusable, Ralph broke off when he should have been following the ball.

it was the first INT that was the troublesome one, but remember this is his first game with the ticats.

OSKEE WEE WEE

I think it's a pretty fair assessment. The only sticking point I have would be the Flick/Peterson comment. I don't think you start two unknowns based on one game's performance. I can't say that they had any more difficulty getting open than anyone else.

Maas did well. One or two bad passing decisions, but overall a solid performance. One of the 3 turnovers was on downs.

I think we can only get better from here.

our guys in the secondary have to cover better
It was just worth repeating.

So why does our secondary always seem to be about 5 yards off the receiver? Are they afraid of getting beat long?

With the exception of the numerous and bad timed penalties and a few other minor blunders, the Cats played well.

The Argos play-action was working well throughout the game. That doesn't excuse the first TD (Bruce) where the DB was clearly burned. We need to be sharper in that area.

Oski Wee Wee,

Hey, i give Sackattack credit for not being afraid to criticize Flick when he's always posting on here. (i.e. he's not kissing up.)

But the way to beat the Argos is not through your wideouts. You have to nickel and dime them to death. I'm sure we'll see a lot more of Flick and Peterson in future games.

edit: whoops, i forgot that you can't use the forbidden word on here

I don't think the Argos are in the Commish's pocket.

I think another thing we should work on is forcing the deep ball. We should give our WRs the opportunity to catch it deep in man on man coverage. Guys like Ralph, Flick, and Peterson will go up and get you the ball. Secondly, when you're in the red zone... RUN THE BALL. Their secondary is going to be so congested that close to their redzone that they'll be able to get great coverage every passing down. Put in a guy like Aidoo who has more power than Holmes and send him to the house. Aidoo, contrary to popular opinion, is a very strong back and can take it for a few yards after being hit, and I think Holmes needs a bit of momentum before he has that capability. Either way, run the ball in the red zone.

He didnt do anything worth criticizing lol... they threw him the ball twice, he caught it both times... that sums up DJ's day.

Bingo!

I am very worried that our defence and offence were very uncreative and stagnant. They both looked frighteningly similar to last year. Last season, the offence would get stuck in either "long" or "short" mode, and they did against the Argos. It's not that you shouldn't take what's given to you, but seriously EVERYONE who watches this league knows that the Argos defence thrives on giving up lots of yards but never giving up big plays or points. If you just go underneath, again and again, you play into their hands. It was poor play calling that stank of the fear of taking risks. If you want to score at some point, you MUST make them at least respect the risk of you deep game. On defence, blitzes by LBs (and even a safety blitz) were extremely effective... so why did they happen so rarely? The Argos have an undersized line; we all know this. They can't handle the extra pressure. And Wynn isn't exactly Allen with his scrambling ability. With our DBs getting burned for passes longer than 10 yards, you have to believe that there was enough time to blitz. And even if you can't get the pressure through consistently, what's the loss? They connect for a big gain? Well, the Argos were doing that anyway! Just like with the deep ball, they have to at least respect the risk that you'll blitz, so when you put your LBs into an agressive stance, they have to shift their protection against the threat of added pressure.

Seriously, this is Coaching 101. Why did the schemes for this team look no different than last year? Other than the new plays clearly designed for Holmes, I saw very little improvement and I was quite depressed. We lost lots of games by 10 points or less last year. Continuing to lose by 10 (to a team without their best player) doesn't exactly speak of progress.
