A deep dive into the pending free agent quarterbacks

There is no position more crucial to the game of Canadian Football than quarterback.

Duh, Ferguson, do you think we’re new?

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://www.cfl.ca/2024/12/13/a-deep-dive-into-the-pending-free-agent-quarterbacks

I respect Ferguson’s knowledge, but if he thinks Cody losing his starter’s job is “strange,” he wasn’t paying attention to what was happening in Montreal.

Also not sure how he thinks Shiltz has taken any kind of step toward proving anything when he barely played in 2024, why he overlooks Masoli’s evident decline, and why he thinks Streveler can be a starter when the progression he’s looking for (to pass-first QB) hasn’t been evident at all. Streveler will be 30 years old in January. At this point, he is what he is until/unless he shows otherwise.

Right on all marks. I’m not sure where Cody will land - Riders & Elks have been suggested spots. Riders - maybe. They’re all in this year & Harris is on a 1 year deal. Elks? That would be a massive mistake. You can’t hand Ford the keys & then bring in Fajardo - wrong message to Ford, wrong message to fans. And personally - Cody is a bit of a whiner. That predates his latest “woe is me” diatribe.

Absolutely spot on about the other QB’s.

MBT? if anything, he showed he’s done this last season. He was unable to win in his first 7 games this season. He put up huge numbers but really - the only numbers that count are the ones that show the final score and there - he was a fail…

Of the rest of the list - backups mostly. I hope Schiltz gets a fair shot somewhere and so does Maier. They were handcuffed by a no run game/one reliable receiver offence in Calgary so I don’t think we have seen their best.

Fajardo, Masoli, and MBT? We may have seen their best. They may be useful coaching up a young starter but they won’t settle for that money for the most part.

A good opportunity for Jack Maier is joining hands with SSK. And SSK will adopt well on him.
Reasons:

  1. Marc Mueller was his QB coach back in 2023.
  2. Riders need not to worry about QB lineup for a while including short term injury situation and long term.
  3. JM can learn and adopt in SSK to be the stable Franchise QB - no need to roam around CFL.
Both SSK and JM has to work out the costing portion.

Other places for JM is not quite feasible as he is 27, and all young starters in other teams may produce spark inside the team. WPG may be an option too, depends on the new OC and how WPG view the future. I may personally not worry about next in line in WPG as of now.
Will JM willing to go behind Bo in Hamilton, if they consider as next…?

MBT and Masoli, can fit anywhere other than SSK, WPG and TiCats.
Cody situation is the worst. With his capability, he can run the team and win Greycup with any good OC. Hamilton can consider him but it may create issues inside the team any would expect. But Cody has to wait for a while. Injuries, management changes will definitely will open up places for him.

Toronto will not leave Arbuckle in 2025 and that is what it is good for him too. Dukes may stay too, I expect.
Patterson may stay in SSK other than that there is a cost measure cost him. He will definitely be a second guy in 2025 before entering into starting lineup. If not SSK, WPG, HAM, BC are fitting landing spot for him.

Matthew Shiltz and Nick Arbuckle have both taken the next step from fringe wildcard to legitimate starter in my mind. After years of ups and downs, backup roles and injury fill-ins, I could see either of them landing somewhere on a two year contract and next year leading a team to the playoffs.

Huh??? What step did Shiltz take? Arbuckle maybe but I think he’s had enough chance to show he’s not the guy. Maybe in a perfect situation like a stellar team in front of you and you can just show up and beat a team that’s tripping on it’s own shoelaces (like Winnipeg did) but not throughout a cfl season.

I was wondering that myself. 2 starts, 62 passes/34 receptions, 438 yards is hardly enough to show anything.

He did better than that in his two years in Hamilton.

I think Fajardo may just stay in Montreal and take the money and enjoy being a backup. He may play anyway if Alexander struggles at all.

Montreal I bet wants to keep him as well.

MBT is done.

Maier could likely be a Rider in February.

That’s it.

Ferguson is such a Bomber fan that he actually thinks Strevler can play qb, he can’t.

The CFL along the entire league has accumulated the most amount of quality QBS than it has in years. For the first time, there are 2 who are Canadian in the modern league. Even in the 3rd position there are QBS people/fans don’t even know about. Something has developed in football which started in college and has moved into the CFL first and now is prevalent in the NFL. The running QBS! It’s a new thing, but it’s a dangerous one. Teams are now have to gain 2 quality QBS. Is it possible to get 2 running QBS? That’s the question. Teams realize the starter most likely will not make it through the season, it’s not easy being a running QB, they will take a violent hit. The teams who back up this position like all the others will go the farthest

he’s not a Starter, neither in the CFL or NFL. the fact the NFL gave him a shot is a joke.
