I posted a rebuttal in that thread…I notice you still haven’t responded to it.
Here it is
There are 3 right there and I will add another one
I dont remember what year it was but it was the Eastern Final against Toronto…AC marched the Als downfield and scored a 15 yard rushing TD in the final seconds of the game…
That is 4!
Bottom line is just because you don’t remember them, doesn’t mean they never happened
If you are going to accuse someone of something, at least know the meaning of what it is you are accusing him of. Every QB will leave the pocket and get sacked from time to time…
The man has thrown for over 60,000 yards and over 335 TDs and you come up with “He leaves the pocket too soon!”
I stand by my opinion that you are searching for an excuse, any excuse to discredit the man.
AC is .600 in regular season play and .166 in Grey Cup games. There is no way anyone can argue that he dosen't have a huge drop off in his game under pressure. His stats will show him as one or the most durable and stable QB in league history but he will be remembered as the guy who couldn't win the big game. Winning it this year would help that a bit.
By refusing to give some seat time to MacPherson and/or Leak. HE (Trestman) will likely cause the Als to lose these guys in the off season when they become FA. He won't care, he will be long gone back th the States but the fans will be vengeful if One of these guys becomes a star in this league for another team and was not given a chance in Montreal. I'm telling you this is BAD business.
Als are 7-1 and Calvillo's production can be graphed negatively pretty much straight down from game one to game eight so why not play the kids a bit and allow Calvillo to rest his arm and head for three to four weeks and go from there. The "kids" will get a chance to see where they are in their development and if they aren't quite there will accept their situation more easily and if they shine than we'll have a go to guy in the event that the Als have six points on the boards at the half of the GC game.
Not sure, but they were our two worst cover guys against Sask. On the first Sak TD, it was Cox’s blown coverage assignment that let Bagg get wide open behind the secondary. I initially posted that it was Sanchez, but I’m pretty sure now that it was Cox who whiffed on the coverage and Sanchez tried to hustle back to cover the mistake but was far too late.
Cox is an awful cover man, flat-out awful. He was the beneficiary of a lovely underthrown Durant pass right into his numbers, but you ask him to line up against a good receiver and he will either get badly beaten or flagged for PI. In the fourth quarter, Sask had an incompletion on first down in which the replay clearly showed Cox grabbing Dressler’s jersey for about 4 seconds, tackling him with both hands, and hauling him down without a penalty. Embarrassing. On the next play, he did the same thing, but this time the refs woke up and called illegal contact. I don’t want to see Chip Cox covering Weston Dressler EVER AGAIN. As the SAM linebacker, he’s essentially a dimeback with tackling responsibilities; Burke has to work the coverage schemes to make sure Cox gets the other team’s fifth receiver, not their best one! On second and long, he drops into such a deep zone that a simple screen or swing pass to the flat will likely get the receiver or running back 15+ yards.
I give the rest of the D a break because anyone can have an off-night. Sanchez is usually pretty solid at corner, and we normally don’t have this many breakdowns in our deep coverage (how many times was a Sask receiver wide open with no Al in sight? 7? 8?). But Cox … oi. I’m still trying to figure out why we cut T.J. Hill.
I blame Scott Squires for this only because you haven’t and every game he mustve done something wrong (I do agree with your previous criticism of him though). The defence definitely had a rare off night and I absolutely agree that Cox should not be put into coverage on a top receiver he should be the last cover man taking either the 5th receiver or the RB
Seriously, though, I will repeat my praise of Squires and special teams in the Sask game. From start to finish, the coverage was solid, the punt protection was excellent (no blocks or even near-blocks IIRC), and the blocking for Taylor was spot-on, to the tune of big yardage gained and one TD. Their performance would have been a win even without LT’s TD (heh). I don’t ask for a punt-return TD every week. All I ask is that we execute solidly in all aspects of the teams on at least a semi-regular basis.
He’s won one big game, and again, how can you fault him for the second loss to Edmonton in the Grey Cup? He staged multiple comebacks in that game but we came up short in TRIPLE-OT because our D was unable to stop Ray.

Do you have evidence for any of this, or is it just speculation?

I seriously dispute the idea that all our offensive struggles can be pinned on Anthony Calvillo. While he hasn't been consistently effective recently, the playcalling has frequently been questionable (no deep balls, no run, too much dink and dump, not enough red-zone creativity). As soon as Trestman and Milanovich started to attack the red zone directly instead of dumping off 3-yard passes underneath, Calvillo was putting up majors again.
That being said, I’d love to see AC rested for 1-2 weeks (3-4 is too much time off for any QB who wants to stay in rhythm) so McPherson and possibly Leak can get some playing time. Nothing wrong with developing our backups in case Calvillo gets injured in the playoffs or is ineffective. Maybe we can have a situation where Calvillo plays a half and then McPherson & Leak split the second half? It doesn’t seem like securing the division will be that much trouble this season, so why not use the time productively?
Okay, ro1313, I'll concede the 4 times. 4 times in almost 10 years?
You accuse me of having a personal vendetta against AC. Why would I do that?!! Normally, I'm quite positive when it comes to players. (I loved Sonny Wade but adtmittedly, did not like Jimmy Jones).
If I see a guy leaving the pocket too soon, am I supposed to say, "Well, it's AC so I don't dare criticize him?" Do me a favor. Next game that there's pressure on him, count steamboats on how long he hangs in there, and then compare to any other QB in the league (CFL or NFL).
Sometimes a QB has to hang in there, and maybe take a last minute hit, in order to complete a medium to long pass. Another poster here has been complaining about all the short passes and the lack of a medium to long game. But if your QB is taking off too soon or dumping off too soon, then that's at least part of the problem (with play-calling being the rest).
I think AC is a very good QB who has benefited from a consistently good team loaded with lots of talent. I also think that other CFL QBs would have put up equally impressive numbers with the talent AC has had at his disposal over the years.
If I am not overwhelmed by what AC has accomplished, it's because of what he has not accomplished when the opposition was either equal to the Als in talent, or presented more of a challenge than the usually over-matched opposition.
Do you at least remember what he looked like when he was on a poor team (Hamilton)? I think to a certain point the Als have benefited from having AC, but I believe that he has benefited much more from being on a consistently talent-laden team like the Als.
I’ll never forget (or forgive) that; one of the alltime great bonehead coaching moves. Regardless of how poorly Matthews thought our starting corners had been playing, to insert Brandon Williams and DJ Johnson as corners in the Grey Cup game was a dreadful decision. Almost as excruciating as Jimmy Jones bobbling that snap in a Grey Cup game years ago that cost us another one against Edmonton. . .
Moving around in the pocket is part of what a good QB does to open up sight lines and throwing lanes to receivers whom he might not otherwise be able to hit. When possible, Calvillo will use his pocket presence to find that lane and hit his receiver – as he did against Winnipeg the previous week with TD throws to Carter and Watkins. When the pocket is collapsing, he’ll take off, and that’s as it should be. The Riders were getting massive pressure after Bourke got injured; Perrett was completely ineffective at left tackle and all the switches on the line (Flory for Perrett, Brodeur-Jourdain for Flory) left the unit unable to cope with Chick and Baggs.
Sometimes a QB has to hang in there, and maybe take a last minute hit, in order to complete a medium to long pass.
'Hanging' in there won't make a dime's worth of difference if you have no throwing lanes and a 300-pound gorilla forcing a fumble because you decided to stay in the pocket. Calvillo is not a scrambler; if he takes off, it's because he knows that the pocket is collapsing. That's not happy feet, that's common sense.
I also think that *other CFL QBs* would have put up equally impressive numbers with the talent AC has had at his disposal over the years.
Good thing we're dealing in counterfactuals or I might actually be tempted to offer a rebuttal here.
Do you at least remember what he looked like when he was on a poor team (Hamilton)?
And this makes him different from others QBs how exactly? Look, the quarterback isn't a God, and he can't win games by himself. Put the best QB in the league on a poor team with poor coaching and he will struggle. So I don't really understand the relevance of bringing up Calvillo's years in Hamilton.
This is a direct contradiction of your earlier post, in which you asserted that other CFL quarterbacks could thrive in Montreal’s system just as Calvillo has. If that’s so, how is the quarterback the most important player if he’s that replaceable?
Could it be that a football team, which plays a sport that depends on teamwork more than any other major sport (you can freelance in hockey, but in football, one man’s mistake can easily ruin a play for the other 11 players), needs everyone working on the same page in order to be successful?
The commonplace is that the foundation of a good team starts on both lines: O and D. There’s a reason for that. If your boys can’t pass-block or open up holes for the running game, it doesn’t matter who you have taking the snaps. You will not be successful.
I just want to add that I have nothing but admiration for Anthony but for what ever reason. Bad luck Triple OT, Stupidity (Matthews musical corners) and whatever other reasons, He's broken more hearts GC week than any other QB in the history of the league. It must eat at him more than any of us...
HIS record? Like he owns it and nobody else is responsible for it? This isn’t tennis. Football is a team game. Sure, he’s had his share of Grey Cup stumbles, but look around the league and tell me which other active QB has made it to 6 Grey Cup finals as the starter. That’s right, nobody. We don’t even have a valid frame of reference for his production in Grey Cup games.
Evidence ? This is a discussion forum, it is an opinion. If we asked you for evidence for every opinion you make, you would have anohter 3000 posts.
I only asked because you talked about Trestman leaving for the States and not playing the backups because he wants to preserve his record. All that is speculation.
I am not suggesting it was all Calvillo but remember he was the QB and the play caller in most of those games.

Say what? Calvillo hasn't called his own plays for years. The plays come in from the bench.
