3 stats that defined Toronto's Week 17 win over Montreal

TORONTO — The Toronto Argonauts earned a crucial win against the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday night after losing their last four encounters with East Division foes. With the game tied at halftime as well as with 3:37 remaining, not much separated the two teams at BMO Field, but Toronto was able to do just about enough to edge it in the end.

Better time management on the last drive
Run the ball burn the clock make Montreal use its timeout kick the field goal hang on with a defensive stand win the game
They would have beaten Hamilton last week if they employed the same game plan lesson learned obviously
Oh well big win second place on the horizon

You are right about time management - but the Argos play a very boring brand of football - kicking 8 field goals to win. I know that FGs are part of the game, but for a guy who sees maybe 1 minute of play during the game - a kicker has far too much influence on the outcome of a game. I believe they need to go back to where the hash marks were a few years back and FGs are kicked from them. It might be a bit more of a challenge. To score 24 out of the 37 points shows that the Argo offence can’t score TDs.

The hashmark change to narrow them was to facilitate the offence to be more creative by being centred on the field. This allows for more of the playbook being available. Don’t pick on a positional player due to success and talent.

Then again when a change in field design benefits only this so -called “positional player” - then this is not a good sign either. Change is needed when one player who plays so little can decide a game - not to forget too that 24 of the 37 points scored by the Argos is not a sign of success and talent on the part of their offence. I still believe that moving the hash marks back to where they were would improve the game. When the number of field goals account for the vast majority of point scoring - it makes the game BORING!

8 field goals is too many. The Argos have to improve their goal line and deep drive plays. They were the better team and the score should have been much more lopsided in Toronto’s favor.

You could reduce the field goal to two points. (haha)

Lewis Ward hit 69 straight FGs on those wide hashmarks. Ozzy went 8 of 9 against Ottawa to win 24-21 back in ‘96 on those wide hashmarks. That is not the problem. Reducing the value of FGs, give me a break. Tell the defence to make a stop further up field if you have a problem with the number of points scored by a kicker. Fact is: kickers, just like quarterbacks, have gotten better. DEAL WITH IT!

Great job by Hirim L. but kicking eight field goals, including four from the red zone, shows failure on the part of the offence. They escaped with a win because of good defence, which lately has been letting them down. Yes, they won, but too many failed drives and mistakes. Coaching staff must address this and if they can’t there is something seriously wrong.

The CFL should commission a study to see if the narrower hash marks has resulted in more offence in the games. I have my doubts.
