2nd Down Passing Plays

I may not be the most skilled at football tactics, but ....

When I played Madden, I would hear him say that on 3rd down [2nd down in the CFL] you have to throw at least as far as the first down marker.

The number of times the Riders will throw a 7 yard pass on 3rd and 10 is annoying. Throw it the extra 3, get the catch and move the chains. The defense will always let you catch the 7 yarder if they know you can't get any more.

The frantic ends of games show what they can do when they have to throw longer passes.

Is this coaching, QB problems, problems with the receivers, or all of the above?

John Madden has never said an intellegent thing in his life, but don't get me started on that. But its true, throwing short of the 1st down marker on 2nd down is a waste of time.

you would think that a receiver would have enough sense to go atleast the required yardage for the 1st down

The Riders are famous for throwing the 2-10 passes for only 3 yards! You can thank Marcel Bellefeau or whatever his dumb name is.

Its common sense that if its 2-7, you throw 8!!! yards!
