2025 NHL Playoffs

And King Rat Marchand gives Florida the win in OT to avoid going down 3-0 in the series.

Jets with a strong first period and 2-0 lead. Their power play finally looked like the best in the league with everyone back for the first time in a couple of months. Morrissey making a huge difference so far.

That was a MUST Overtime home win for FLA!
WPG up 3-0 end of 2nd

Wpg wins 4-0, Ehlers with a 200 ft. shorty. Jets could easily have won 8-0 but Jake the Snake made several outstanding saves. Same could be said for Bucky in the Wpg net - so without the killer goal-tending could have been 8-3 Jets.

Yeah Jets played like the Jets and dominated tonight. Series tied 1-1 and I still expect it to be a long one. Jets now need a split in Dallas to get home ice back.

Not even one game, eh?
:white_check_mark: Not a hockey play

Thread below on similar cross-check suspensions, all of which resulted in three-game suspensions.
3 games – EDM Connor McDavid cross-check to face of Conor Garland. Again, similar play
3 games – VAN Tyler Myers cross-check to face of Even Bouchard. Once more, similar type of play.
3 games – NJD Timo Meier cross-check to face of Zach L’Hereux. Similar play with xchk to face
DOPS (Department of Player Safety) has said that in-game penalty has no bearing on suspension length, provided offense is suspension-worthy. Apparently, in this case, they felt it wasn’t.

Sportsnet commenator Mark Spector:canada::ukraine: @SportsnetSpec
That’s a pretty healthy cross check in the face, and Roy avoids even a 1 game suspension.
As always DoPS is a total mystery

Edmonton hockey commentator Jackie Bondurant @JackieBee_16
I’m not saying that Roy should have been given a suspension on that cross check to Frederic’s face – but I’m also wondering how he didn’t when McDavid got 3 games for cross checking someone on the head. It’s the inconsistency in this league that pisses me off

Edmonton Journal Hall-of-Fame hockey wrier Jim Matheson @jimmathesonnhl
So Nic Roy avoids suspension for xcheck to Frederic face. He had hearing which almost always means suspension but they fine Vegas forward instead…Only thing I can figure with Roy not getting 1 game rap for his cross-check to Frederic face is NHL felt Oilers got their pound of flesh with 5 min PP in OT. Plus they know they blew call to Arvidsson when tripped McNabb. But I thought players had to still control their stick?

Senior NHL writer for the Athletic Mark Lazerus @MarkLazerus
If cross-checking a guy in the mouth isn’t suspension-worthy, what is?

Las Vegas hockey site SinBin.vegas @SinBinVegas
Wow, Roy avoids suspension. Very very rare for a player to get a hearing and not miss a game. Fortunate break for VGK.

Vegas hockey writer for The Athletic Jesse Granger @JesseGranger_
You almost never see a player get a hearing and it not result in a suspension, so this is a major break for the Golden Knights.

Vegas hockey commentator Tony Cordasco @TonyDasco
Any other team and it’s a one-game suspension minimum. Just sayin’

Sportsnets Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
It’s rare — hasn’t happened this year, but has in past — for players to get a hearing and not be suspended. Roy escapes, because he was reckless instead of trying to injure. Learned today no player can be fined more than $5K without a hearing.

Oilers, :oilers:
A one line team?
Think again
Every forward on the Oilers has scored at least one Playoff goal
and I believe 3 more from their defence
(and that is without their best Dman Bouchard in the lineup)

I’ve been saying this all playoffs. The inconsistency by the NHL discipline department is maddening. This isn’t even the worst oversight as Schenn got nothing for injuring Scheifele. There have been a couple of others. Even taking into account the rule of thumb that one playoff game equals two regular season games, a peculiar rule of thumb to say the least, Roy should have received at least one game. I say this even though I want Vegas to win.

This wasn’t arguably as bad as some of the other examples cited in what you posted as it was in the heat of a one on one battle rather than a pre-meditated dirty hit and didn’t cause an injury, but you are still responsible for your stick and it wasn’t a hockey play. Does anyone have a copy of the NHL playoff rulebook they can link? I can only find the regular season rulebook.

And Carolina has completely dominated Washington in two of the three games and could have won the third game. Logan Thompson with a Hellesuckian playoff performance last night losing his angle on two of the goals. The only redeeming hope for Washington is that they have nothing to fear with Freddie Anderson in net, historically not a great playoff goaltender. He could hurt them in the next round. I’m sharpening my fork already on this one.

Unfortunately I fell asleep last night when Vegas made it 3-2. I thought for sure they were done for the year when they were down 2-0 early. Good for Vegas to come back in hostile territory. They aren’t done yet obviously, but my fork was already sharpened after Game 2. I had it raised early on last night, but have now put it back on the table. I still think a Vegas victory is unlikely in this series although until they lose 3 they can play relatively pressure free.

I think that today’s two series will end up being the closer ones. I expect Florida to win today and make even better use of their huge goaltending advantage, which is what cost the Leafs Game 3 more than anything with Woll whiffing on the 4th goal. I almost expect the Jets/Stars series to go 7 games and have no idea whether the dominating Jets or the scrambling Jets will show up today or who will be dressed in Hellebuyck’s gear.

I haven’t cheered for the Leafs since the days of Dave Keon, Johnny Bower, Bobby Baun and Tim Horton!
But my deep down inner Leaf that has been buried for so many decades is coming back into my failing limited memory banks!
This does seem like a different Leafs team playing structured hockey under Berube and I am hoping they continue!
It won’t be easy with the Leafs #1 Goalie out(concussion)
and Matthews virtually non-existant
(which always seems to happens at this time of year)

A Leaf verses WPG or EDM Stanley Cup final would be fabulous

Grover, I had a friend who once had ā€œinner Leaf diseaseā€. Fortunately it can be cured. Any competent doctor can prescribe the right antibiotic and coupled with therapy you should be able to conquer it within a few months.

It’s like shingles in that the virus can sit in your spinal cord for decades before activating. Apparently they are close to developing a vaccine.

If left unchecked it can lead to the more serious ā€œcenter of the universeā€ disease which can in turn lead to repercussions such as employment by TSN and is usually accompanied by extreme disappointment if not depression.

Any thoughts or expectations for the Jets in Dallas? Hellebuyck getting pulled from the St. Louis games has been well documented. However, the whole team took turns in imploding in those road games as well, just like other visiting teams who played in St. Louis over the last couple of months while the Blues racked up 15 consecutive home victories. The Blues disposed of all teams they faced during that streak quite effectively. There were some serious home ice magic happening there, and it may turn out that the first round series between the Jets and Blues could be the toughest one on the way to the cup. I’m expecting (and hoping) the Jets’ and Hellebuyck’s road woes don’t continue any further.

No expectations for the Jets. They were the best road team in the league this year with their 26 wins, one ahead of Washington and Toronto. I therefore don’t think their failure to win in St. Louis is part of a pattern.

St. Louis had success against Winnipeg by hitting them and especially Scheifele and Morrissey, often illegally. Even though Dallas has size they haven’t been using it so far and that has helped the Jets get out of their own end easier and enter the Dallas zone easier than they could against St. Louis. Maybe Dallas will change their approach.

The Jets are a Swiss army knife team, however and usually adapt pretty well to what their opposition throws at them. They are the best defensively and one of the best offensively and can hit with the best and are as fast as any team and noticeably faster than St. Louis and even Dallas. So pick your poison. There really isn’t any way to beat them if they are on their game and execute as they are the most complete team in the league, except for goaltending, which I still don’t trust even though Helly has somehow strung together some 5 good playoff periods in a row. Also, no team in the playoffs has faced better opposition goaltending in Binnington and Oettinger.

I think how their respective injured players perform is a big factor as well. Ehlers didn’t do much his first couple of games back, but was one of the best Jets last game. Robertson really hasn’t done anything yet and in theory should bring more to Dallas than Ehlers does to Winnipeg. Scheifele, the Jets heart and soul, has been really good since his return although you can easily see he isn’t 100% yet. All understandable when playing hurt. Morrissey was hurting last game and as the announcers pointed out his left shoulder injury affected his power arm and as a result he couldn’t shoot with much velocity. Still he played just over 22 minutes (a team high) but less than he normally would. He had an assist and was +2. His all world skating ability and uber hockey smarts haven’t been affected though. If Heskanein is back today that will sure help Dallas, although he too will need some acclimatization time, probably more than the other injured players given the length of time he’s been out. Still, although he is a Norris level defenceman the Jets have the edge with Morrissey.

Jets could win or lose today. Either way I think it will be a long series. Game starts in about 90 minutes at 3:30 Central.
