NHL Power Rankings: The final 16

Crazy wide-open 1st period in Winnipeg.

These are two very good defensive teams so I expect the series will settle down to a close checking style like is expected.

There were stretches of close checking at times and there were a lot of mistakes made by both teams to give up quality scoring chances, especially the Jets. As the panel says, the Jets may have been a little nervous in the first period.

I think you’re right and that it will settle down to be more defensive. Good for the Jets though if it remains high scoring as they have way more firepower. I also agree with Bieksa that all 3 penalties called were pretty marginal. If they do that they have to do it the rest of the game. We’ll see. Overall an entertaining first period with lots of hitting.

Jets dominate the Blues for the second half of the game and especially the third (shots 9-1) to take Game 1 5-3 with an empty netter. No one said it would be easy, but good to see that they shook off the early nervousness to prevail. Jets top line, the highest scoring line in the league, with 3 goals. Blues going after Scheifele with 19 seconds left. Hate that crap. Scheifele with 3 points and the best player on the ice tonight. Someone needs to tell Team Canada management.

The Lord’s Stanley cup simply is a race for the first team to win 16 games…one down, 15 to go!

Without a doubt the hardest championship trophy to win in any sport .

Don’t tell that to my co-worker who played minor league baseball. According to him, trench warfare is nothing compared to playing baseball.

Here is my definition of baseball…you are either trying to hit a ball that someone is throwing at you or you are trying to catch a ball that someone is hitting to you …in between doing these two things you sit on your ass on a bench or stand out in a field . Baseball is the only sport where you can be considered a superstar even if you fail 7 out of 10 times in what you are doing .

Well that Leafs vs Senators game was painful.

Hopefully Ottawa cleans up the undiscipled penalties and preventable defensive breakdowns.

Ah yes so I heard, but my prophecy in the pool is being fulfilled, as both teams are clearly already beating the crap out of each other.

I do agree that the Senators should win, in contrast to the pick made by most of us, but otherwise I feel that the mutual beatings should continue irrespective of morale.

Nobody mess with the honourable prophecy for the Battle of Ontario!

I am not sure how many of you in the US live in a market that used to have “Bally Sports” as a regional sports network to show games for your local team (we don’t here in Philadelphia, merely Comcast’s sucky “NBC Sports Philadelphia” regional sports network, but for what it’s worth, here is some information on how all the action ended up on FanDuel Sports Network in the markets that formerly had Bally Sports.

Otherwise the games remain behind paywalls on TNT and ESPN when not on ABC, though in some markets like Las Vegas and in neighbouring states, even playoff games for the Golden Knights are free on local TV.

A preview of the Edmonton/LA series from Travis Yost which finally starts tonight. Unlike Mr. Yost I’m going with the Kings. Superior defence and goaltending. Plus if POS Evander Kane plays it’s a lock for LA. the over/under on when he takes a stupid penalty is 4 shifts.

I feel it will be Goals against that will be The Oilers problem,
Not goals for as their Powerplay is nuclear with McJesus and Draisaitl
but
Their 22+ minute #1 Defenceman Ekholm is out and their Goaltending is suspect
Kings are 2nd overall in the League in Goals against per game regular season

What do you or anybody else think would be the reaction in the Toronto media if let’s say the Oilers were swept, or perhaps win only one game in the series after they had to go to double overtime to do it?

And would that occasion be their cue to select those Leafs for that damn annual “Canada’s Team” chant?

We’ve already seen the real Canada’s Team this season, and they are champions already.

A panel of 12 TSN experts have ranked the top 25 players in the league which I thought I would post for amusement’s sake. Remember that these are the same clowns that do the power rankings where the Jets are currently ranked about twelfth.

It doesn’t state the specific criteria for selection, but obviously there is recency bias with 4 Jets in the top 25 (not undeservedly) and Hellebuyck #1 (undeservedly).

My general comments:

  • Pasternak should be ahead of McDavid as should Kaprisov be. Kaprisov wasn’t even listed.

  • Suzuki, Hagel, Rantanen and Matthews are too high and probably shouldn’t be on the list. Have you noticed how Rantanen has played lately including in Game #1 of the playoffs? Neither have I.

  • I would invert the order of the Jets with Morrissey being their top player, Scheifele second, Connor third and Hellebuyck fourth. As anyone can plainly see Hellebuyck had little to do with their Game # 1 win. Morrissey belongs in the conversation with Makar and Quinn as the best defenceman in the world.

  • If we are talking this season alone I would put Kucherov ahead of Draisaitl and Mackinnon for #1, but that is splitting hairs and there is a solid argument for any one of the three.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
