As fun as it’s been, I’m going to try to refrain from jinx picks this year.

The first week is usually a bit of a crapshoot.

Here we go:

Oof, week 1 is always the hardest. Might have to marinate on my picks for a day or two.

Interesting that almost no one is picking Calgary at home despite their strong preseason performances.

Probably a reflection of what most of us think about how meaningful pre season games are. Not very. If they were you could hand the Bombers a Grey Cup berth already as they beat the West favourites twice in the pre season.

Hi Abbey, I have a question for you, whether you can help me I’m not sure but thought I’d ask. I have an account and user name that I use for CFL game zone already, but when I wanted to use if for the CFL forums I had to create a new account so I have two names on the forum. Is that the way it’s set up? Anyway thanks for the welcome, I look forward to participating!

As far as I am aware the CFL Game Zone is a completely different animal from the forum. I know you need an account to be a member of the forum and can only have one forum account. It appears that you need a separate one for the Game Zone. I don’t know how many people are members of both, but I would speculate that not too many active forum members are.

I will loop in our administrator @BetweenTheGoalposts and maybe he can tell us if it is possible to have one account for both.

no it is not, unless we enable OAuth so folks can use their gmail as sign in, and i have no idea what game zone has set up. but anyways that can open other cans of worms we don’t want at the start of the regular season.

just use the account you are posting with now. gamezone has nothing to do with this forum and is hosted on a completely different site.

Toughest week to pick; everything is basically a guess with very little hard data to go on one way or another.

:riders: Saskatchewan Roughriders
Ottawa is playing on a slightly short week and travelling out west, so unless something surprising happens, Harris is going to pick that Ottawa secondary apart.

:als_red: Alouettes de Montréal
At home, against a team starting its second-string QB that also had its defence absolutely pillaged in the offseason, I have to pick the Als here. It should still be close because Toronto is never an easy out.

:tigercats: Hamilton Tiger-Cats
I went back and forth a lot on this one, honestly. Calgary with VA under centre is a much different and improved team from the Maier days. But Hamilton’s offence should be ready to pick up where they left off last year, facing new DC Bob Slowik, and I imagine Brent Monson will be very motivated to show Dave Dickenson that firing him was a mistake.

:elks: Edmonton Elks
I vacillated on this pick too. Playing on the road against the Lions and a re-energized Nathan Rourke is a tough test for Tre Ford and new DC J.C. Sherritt. But I have serious concerns about BC’s defence, and as much as Rourke sparkled in the second preseason game, Edmonton has a ton of high-quality veteran talent lined up on defence, and it will likely take a bit of time for new Lions head coach / OC Buck Pierce to get his attack going the way he wants it. I pick Edmonton to shock BC with an upset win.
