:als_red: 2024 Match / Game #9: HAM @ MTL (08-10)

Most likely going to be Alexander starting again. Given that Dom Davis is already at practice, I expect him to dress as the #2 for QB sneaks. Whether it’s Cody or Morgan as the #3 is still up in the air.

First injury report of the week.

TUE practice
Full: Alexander
Limited: Fajardo, Murray
DNP: Cibasu, Callender

If he is able, I expect Fajardo to dress as the backup … if not, I-M-O likely better to prep Morgan as the #2 and just have Davis work on timing with the centres and learn whatever is involved in the short-yard “sneaks”.

The #2 doesn’t typically get reps except with scout team and on sneaks, so I don’t know that Morgan would get extra prep unless he’s the one falling forward for first downs on short yardage. And I think Maas’s energy will be mostly directed at getting Alexander fully prepared for the game. Davis is a CFL veteran and he knows some of our offensive personnel already from 2022. I’m honestly fine with him as the #2 in all situations. Morgan is a raw rookie who is still learning the CFL.

I know backup QBs get very few, if any, snaps in practice … I would expect the “prep” for Morgan would be in terms of film work and working with AC to be fully informed on the game plan … I don’t believe Davis was even in a training camp this season … this week, I wouldn’t want to see him doing anything but short-yardage.

The injury is listed as “Back” so it’s quite possible he injured himself today or it’s something cumulative from previous games.

Edit: On another note, here’s today’s presser with Maas, Alexander, and Dom Davis.

2022 qa # 1 T. Harris, # 2 D. Davis, # 3 D. Alexander

agree this is a serious warning of having as 4th QB a guy who had no practice time, never played in CFL, and barely played any pro game the last few years.

No 4th QB on any team’s roster is going to be a CFL veteran, unless you’re in a weird and undesirable situation like Ottawa where they had to throw guys in the fire the past two years because Masoli kept suffering season-ending injuries.

A 4th QB is a project player, nothing more nothing less.

Absolutely … but the CFL would benefit in the long-term if they found some way for practice roster QBs (even backups and 3rd stringers) to get more development than regular season practices allow.

I agree, but this is a league that can’t even protect its starting QBs and doesn’t pay its average players enough to warrant more practice time per week. A league more interested in fining players for speaking up on unsafe work conditions (see MBT and the schedule) and making hugely unpopular changes without the consent of the affected players (see chipped footballs) than they are with growing the game in positive ways.

Toronto was head-hunting Cody all game long in our first match and there was maybe one RTP / UR call out of a possible 5 or 6. Collaros had his thorax smacked because a 350-lbs. Toronto D-lineman fell on him unnecessarily and that same lineman didn’t get suspended. Micah Awe is allowed to play in this league despite receiving no fewer than four fines for unnecessary roughness in 2023.

The league doesn’t give a crap about the players or player development.

/end rant

Actually, there is one small additional change to my eyes: they are “starting” Behar as a designated national with Fervius as the backup. Last week, it was the inverse. Looks to me like they want to get Behar more involved in the game and that they’re not particularly enamoured of Fervius’s performance so far.

Another note: the past couple of games, we’ve been using Letcher more on offence – including at least once running the ball! – which lines up with his designation on the depth chart. He’s technically starting at boundary slot with Reggie White as the naturalized American and designated American, who can replace a Canadian for a maximum number of snaps per game (I believe 25?).
