2022 Tiger-Cats Training Camp

Three year old article. But has some background.

Even when they were legal noone won with them… They’re simply jinxed for starting QBs. Even the original visor man Jim McMahon wasn’t wearing one with Da bears in '85… If Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Anthony Calvillo, Warren Moon,Terry Bradshaw, Zach Collars, Doug Flutie etc. Never wore one why would anyone think it’s an advantage.

Thanks very much for the update! Nice to know Burt is active on the practice field. I am looking forward to seeing what he brings to this offence.

He’s already given us more than Chapman. So it’s a W.

He looks like he crushes Samsonite luggage for fun. And to think his backup may be Ted Laurent? Those old boys may not be able to chase down qbs outside the pocket but I think we’re going to be damn difficult to run against. Throw in Dylan Wynn and Autry for good measure and I don’t recall us having more depth at defensive tackle.

It would be really sweet if we could entice last year’s draft pick Diallo to come up and play as well. Never heard any more mention of him.

It’s rather amazing but we went from having little to no depth in the interior of the line last year to possibly having the best depth down the middle in the entire league this year .

Both Micah and Teddy have been limited somewhat by injuries. Laurent’s knee was an ongoing concern all last season. I know they’re getting up there but with the off-season and some rotation of both hopefully we’ll see the best from each guy. Wynn should be solid as always, and Autry looked promising

Actually I just took a look at Johnsons last five seasons played and it shows that he has been relatively injury free and rather durable in that time . He has dressed and played in 79 out of a possible 86 games only missing 7 games due to injury or other circumstances .

Big Teddy in that same 5 year time frame has also been just slightly less durable then Johnson having played in 74 games while missing 12 due to injury or other circumstances . He was though admittedly slowed down and not as effective last year due to that wonky knee . The thing of it was though unfortunately that he had to play thru it on most nights due to our lack of rotation and depth in the middle of the line last season .

Lastly though what could be the factor this season is the fact that both are in football terms relative grey beards as both are 34 and nearing the end of their careers . Hopefully though they both have some gas left in the tank for this year and possibly a few more after that if their health holds up .

I see a 3-man rotation through the DT position, with each player playing no more than 2 snaps in a row, ie: play two, off one. This will keep all three of them fresh throughout the game. Actually, wouldn’t both Micah and Wynn qualify as “Naturalized Canadians” and be able to sub for Teddy freely?

Not until 2023…

Pretty sure you’ll see the rotation being mostly Micah and Ted. While Wynn should get a little more rest this year than the last two (he rarely missed a snap), he will still see the majority of plays. I think they’ll move him around a bit as well, on the edge or in the middle in a 3-man front.

I have a question as well . Who is this Keely guy wearing jersey # 73 in the pic accompanying the article ? He’s not on the roster and there is currently nobody listed as such as wearing that numeral last time I checked .

Defensive End Stacy Keely signed in early July 2021. I’m guessing he didn’t make it out of camp. The photo has to brim last year as the team is at Mac, not THF right now.

On the same day that the Keely signing was announced, Domagala’s signing was too. Oddly, at the bottom of the announcement was a communication that Travis Vornkhal had retired. Obviously that retirement didn’t last!

Thanks for the clarification . I will say though that it’s rather odd to use an old pic from last years camp for a story about this years camp . One would think that an up to date camp photo from this year would’ve been available but alas apparently not ?

Additionally I also upon further inspection now see that the since departed Chris Frey is also in the pic directly in front of coach O which would confirm that this pic was taken at last years camp .

Well look who we brought in to coach our kickers

The familiar face working with the Ticats four kickers is Oakville native and former Kilbride resident Mike Vanderjagt, who won the 1996 and ’97 Grey Cups with the Toronto Argonauts, was an NFL all-star and is the only kicker in NFL history to not miss a convert or field goal attempt for an entire season, including the playoffs. He played his final season, in 2008, back in Toronto where Steinauer was a teammate.

He’s here for three days as a guest coach but, living just across the border on the shores of Lake Ontario, he’ll remain on call to the team and to the individual kickers. Vanderjagt has developed all-Americans at Texas Tech and Western Kentucky.

“We’re always looking to be innovative and creative and I think that’s one position that’s not really been coached, at least in the CFL,” Steinauer says. “We wanted to change that and bring someone in who’s done it at a very high level.”

Vanderjagt told The Spectator, “I guess the swagger I carry, coach O hopes can rub off on those guys. I’ve already seen some things I’d like to tinker with but the problem is that they’re all trying to win jobs. It’s not like it’s January and we can fix some things. They’ve got a week. So I don’t want to change them up too much, just tinker a bit and make them more consistent.”

Please, let's have cool heads, communication and logic prevail and keep the camps going.

The CFL and its fans cannot afford any missteps with this season.

Not sure Molson is a whole lot different than Bertolet other than his Canadian passport.
Hoping Brown shows enough to be our PK.

JJ MOLSON Overview

The Canadian-born kicker was heralded coming into UCLA, but has failed to kick with consistent accuracy from intermediate or from distance. Molson has above-average ability to bang home touchbacks and is talented making programmed or off-schedule onside kicks. He worked with two different long-snappers in 2019, which may have thrown him off somewhat, but he hasn’t posted the expected norms teams look for in a draftable kicker.

Strengths

  • Started all four years
  • Consistent end-of-end strikes with good trajectory
  • Balls are typically struck cleanly
  • Has excellent sneak-onside technique
  • Full-time kickoff specialist
  • Hit 72.5 percent for touchbacks over last two seasons
  • Kickoff hang time inside NFL standards

Weaknesses

  • Made just 1-of-6 career attempts from 50-plus yards
  • Missed field goal that would have tied game in final minute of loss to Arizona
  • Hit just 69 percent of career field goal attempts
  • Technique issues cause him to push kicks right
  • Converted only 83 percent of career attempts under 40 yards.
