2022-23 Manitoba Bisons/USports Hockey

August 27: Another Week, Very Little News

Usually by now all teams have posted their exhibition schedules with some rosters being posted. Instead, Manitoba and Sask have yet to confirm their exhibition seasons (though it seems those can now be inferred from the announcements of others) and nobody has a 2022-23 training camp roster posted. Even though the exhibition season starts for three CW teams next weekend.

At least Sask has a story posted, that about Mike Babcock confirming that he will not be returning for a second season. The linked story from the U of S focuses on Brandin Cote becoming the head coach whereas the rest of the media focus on Babcock's intention to retire.

At the start of last season, the Mutts looked impressive. When they faced the Bisons they played better than any opponent the Bisons faced all season. However, after a 7-0 start they went 6-7 down the stretch and lost the 4 v 5 quarter-final series to Calgary.

When UA-Augustana released their schedule this week, a pair of exhibition games were announced against "Korea University" on August 31st and September 1st.

Who? Turns out they are nicknamed the "Anam Tigers" and are one of four university teams in Korea, all based at private universities in Seoul. (The others are Kwangwoon University, Kyung Hee University, and Yonsei University, their big rival.) They also play in a myriad of senior competitions and as recently as 2003 won the Korea Domestic Championship. In additon to this taste of ACAC competition, they will also face the Cochrane Generals and Okotoks Bisons (from the Junior B HJHL) and the Calgary Canucks (of the Junior A AJHL).

This international exhibition game marks the start of the scholastic hockey season. Many Junior A and B teams are also underway with their exhibition seasons. There are not as yet any game stories on this game. In prior games the Koreans were leading the Junior A Calgary Canucks 4-0 after two periods and no final score was posted and they beat the Junior B Okotoks Bisons 9-1. Their game against the Cochrane Generals was cancelled because they were apparently allowed just one game against the HJHL. WTF?

RECRUITING NEWS

The T-irds have six forwards, one defenceman, and a goaltender coming from five different leagues. They lost most of their top players from last year. They have posted their new roster page (linked) and I'll be running down everybody's arrivals and departures as lineups are posted.

  • Sam Huo (F -Tri-City - WHL)
  • Sasha Mutala (F - Tri-City - WHL)

The Evil Monkeys are also heavy on new forwards, and also lost a ton or two of talent from last year. They got five forwards, one defenceman, and one goaltender. Five are WHL grads, and two are from the AJHL.

  • Tanner Fincaryk (C - Lloydminster - AJHL)
  • Adam Hall (C - Vancouver - WHL)
  • Justin Hall (LW - Lethbridge - WHL)
  • Bruce McGregor (C - Sherwood Park - AJHL)
  • Jakin Smallwood (RW - Winnipeg - WHL)

The T-irds usually have LeagueStat for rosters and summaries, but not today. This game was actually in Coquitlam and often teams in those "away" games don't have the facilities to add such updates. However, Windsor's Twitter updated their scoring. The pattern was UBC would score, then Windsor would level. The five goals against would suggest that UBC may have an issue replacing Rylan Toth in goal. Without any game reports or stats it is hard to tell what sort of game it might have been.

This was the only inter-conference match-up of the night. Without the LeagueStat summary this would have been a misleading scoreline. The game was 0-0 after one, shots being 12-11 for SFU. After that, UBC never really needed a goaltender. In the 2nd period, UBC outshot SFU 25-6 but only lead 1-0. The 3rd period saw SFU get just ONE shot, while UBC had two goals on 17 shots to win. Kaeden Lane picked up a 19-save shutout for the T-irds, and may have caught up on some week one homework. The T-irds are now 1-1-1 in the pre-season.

As per the linked story, SFU‛s teams are now called the Red Leafs. I guess they picked a name to match the logo they used last year.

NEWS AND NOTES

The Bluegars announced a massive recruiting class on Thursday. Their link has just pictures. I was not expecting such high turnover, but so far it seems to be a new thing in the CW. The got themselves two goaltenders, three defencemen, and five forwards. They have three WHL acquisitions, four if you count their UPEI transfer in goal. Here‛s the list:

  • Shane Farkas (G - UPEI - AUS)
  • Connor Bouchard (F - Tri-City - WHL)
  • Blake Stevenson (F - Red Deer/Calgary - WHL)
  • Jackson Berry (G - Drayton Valley - AJHL)

This is the season‛s first big weekend nation-wide. All CW teams are in action, except for UBC, and the AUS and OUA have a lot of games as well. The Bisons are off to Regina to face two opponents once each, namely the Banjo Cats and the Mythical Mutants, in a 3-way dance. I don‛t mind that format for a weekend at all.

Regina and MacEwan have both posted this year‛s roster page on their websites. The Bisons are keeping us waiting.

Regina has not had a recruiting announcement yet. However, with the roster being posted, I could break down their new line-up. They are only losing one defenceman, but are losing their top 4 scorers (including all-star Connor Chaulk) and all-star goaltender Brandon Holtby. Their eight recruits come from seven different leagues. They will be trying to replace a lot of goals with offence from Junior A recruits.

Holy Trinity bounced back with a convincing win over SFU. This gives them a weekend split and a 1-2-0 pre-season record. They have next weekend off and then start the season in Saskatown on September 30th. Although they had the puck in The Clown‛s zone almost the entire portion I watched, this is probably not adequate prep for the CW season.

Like everybody else, there is a big roster turnover at MRU this year. They have retained their top two scorers, Riley Sawchuk and Nolan Yaremko, arguably the best one-two punch in all of USports. They combined for 77 points in 20 games. They did lose their #3 scorer, Brad Kennedy (22 points in 20 games), and their #1 goaltender, Riley Morris.

Last year Holy Trinity had a 31-man roster, so 15 departures with 11 recruits still leaves a slightly larger than usual roster. The departures were spread throughout the line-up, i.e. they did not disproportionally lose top players or players at one position. Their leading scorer, defenceman Travis Verveda, is back. He had 3 goals and 8 assists in 20 games. Their leading goal scorer, Brayden Brown, had 5 goals in 20 games and has departed. One would think that the newcomers can replace the departed since the scoring numbers were not that high. That said, the team was playing a lot better by the end of the season, so I infer that they had a decent degree of chemistry under their former coach.

UBC is going with just a 24-man roster, as opposed to 28 from a year ago. The recruiting class, at first blush, looks like a decent replacement for the departures. However, the loss of key players raises issues with respect to chemistry after the team is coming off their best two-season run since the days of bell-bottoms. The major loss is clearly going to be in goal where Rylan Toth is gone. He was their best player and a conference all-star.

This weekend round-robin is a GPAC revival. The Bisons, Kittens, and (former) Nor‛Westers used to be GPAC rivals, along with the Brandon Bobcats and Winnipeg Wesmen. The Wesmen folded their hockey team (after the 1983-84 season) and the Nor‛Westers folded all sports programs (after the 1984-85 season). That left the Bobcats, Bisons, and Kittens to join the CW.

The end of this conference has been great for Bison hockey. However, a one weekend revival is nice for nostalgia purposes.

Once Lakehead brought back sports, and joined the OUA as the Thunderwolves (in 2001-02), the Bisons were invited to visit Thunder Bay over the Christmas season on a semi-regular basis. However, I don‛t believe that Lakehead U has visited Friendly Manitoba since the GPAC days.

The Wayne Fleming Arena is undergoing renos and is not available through the end of October. Hence, the games are shifting to The Rink Training Centre (on Wilkes, technically in Oak Bluff although within the perimeter). It is supposed to be a great place to play. The elevated spectator area looks very basic, like any community arena but with a nice view. I‛ll find out! The Bison men, Bison women, and Winnipeg Ice of the WHL are all playing at The Rink for now.

This is a funny weekend in the CW. Manitoba hosts the 3-way dance, Sask and Calgary play a traditional weekend double-header, and Holy Trinity has a bye. That leaves four sides, plus NAIT from the ACAC, to randomly pair off in single games over the weekend.

Before Covid hit and MacEwan left the ACAC for the CW, these two cross-town rivals played three straight finals, all won by MacEwan after finishing second to NAIT in the regular season. So this is a rivalry re-kindled.

This game goes Friday as UBC makes a trip to Edmontown. Their defence will be tested. They gave up 11 goals in two games against Windsor before recording shut-outs against Trinity and SFU. The Evil Monkeys should give them a test. However, with 18 goals in 6 games (5 of them wins) it seems that the Apes are focussed on defence.

I know it is only exhibition, but these teams could be heading into this game without a win over a USports non-expansion team. The T-irds‛ wins have been against Simon Fraser and Holy Trinity, and their losses have been against Windsor. MacEwan was whipped by Mount Royal, but otherwise have had close losses.

The Evil Monkeys lost some really good players. However, they also have a load of quality returnees and new recruits. In all likelihood, this will again be a first place team. There are a couple of Junior B players in the training camp roster. With 28 players in camp, they are not likely to keep (or at least play) all of them.

D: 25 Sambrook - Patrick
F: 14 Keane - 15 Dalke - 24 Pierce

LAKEHEAD
Goal
30 Aiken (31 Wright)

Defence
18 Jette - 28 Auger
4 Wojciechowski - 8 Van Den Hurk
2 Borbely - 22 Williams
20 Fortin

Forwards
15 Ho - 27 Mack - 16 Blackwell
19 Stiles - 9 Smith - 25 Massie
11 Fox - 12 Dempster - 10 Badalamenti
14 Van Unen - 13 Fox - 29 Edwards

Scratches
1 Cicigoi
5 Turpin - 23 Massie - 3 Whitaker
17 Gerrie - 26 Gervais - 21 Pouliot - 24 Miles

Lakehead‛s players did not have names on their shirts, unless they pulled a Harold Ballard move and put white letters on a white background.

This was a case of ugly goaltending for the new recruit from the NCAA. The shots on goal clock was not necessarily accurate. I think they just counted the saves. In any event, the shot clock said 17-12 in favour of the Bisons. Hawryluk‛s save percentage is taking a pounding! I am not sure who all is in camp but I did not see anybody being an overwhelming favourite to be #1.

Here‛s the very unofficial summary:

1st period
LU 1-0 #25 Massie
LU 2-0 #28 Auger
UM 2-1 #10 Skoleski (PP)
Penalties: UM #9, LU #13, LU #11

2nd period
LU 3-1 #27 Mack
LU 4-1 #28 Auger
Penalties: UM #22, LU #19, LU #10, UM #18

3rd period
LU 5-1 #13 Fox (SH)
LU 6-1 #27 Mack (SH)
UM 6-2 #21 Basarab
Penalties: LU #28, LU #27, LU #9, UM #26, LU #32

This was an exceptionally sloppy game. Bad passes and not a lot of quality play-making. Lakehead took their penalties in pairs, providing 5-on-3 powerplays in the process. The first time, the Bisons scored. But the second, Lakehead scored twice, once on a blueline breakaway on a bad pass and the second when a player exited the box and had an instant breakaway. Prior to the 3rd period shorthanded goals, the Bisons had immense pressure every shift and were really carrying the play. The lack of offensive finish hurt them.

Nice to see that LeagueStat was activated by the Evil Monkeys. The last goal was an empty-netter, so this was a close one. Matt Fonteyn had two goals for the Monkeys. Nick Schneider got the win with 30 saves on 33 shots. Kaeden Lane had the loss with 26 saves on 30 shots. That‛s not an awful stat, but certainly not all-star numbers. UBC is now 2-2-1 (1-2-1 against USports) and the Monkeys are 6-1-0.

Penalties were not shown on the scoreboard for this one. The shot clock gave Regina the edge, 18-17. So not a lot of stops. And there is no guarantee as to accuracy of my summary.

The winning goal was set up by a penalty in 3-on-3 overtime, in the neutral zone on Lakehead‛s trailing player. Not a wise penalty at that stage of the game. Being down 5-3 late in the 3rd, Regina rallied to tie the game and a win seemed inevitable, until the PP happened.

The schedule says that the finale between the Banjo-Cats and Bisons goes Sunday at 2:00 at The Rink. Hopefully that‛s accurate. Maybe I‛ll get there early and bring myself a sub.

This tight win over the Mythical Mutants gives the T-irds a split of their weekend trip to Edmontown. MacEwan held a 2-0 lead in the 2nd period before UBC rallied for the win.

Quick summary:
Mac: Salame, (8:52 1st PP), Aston, (3:51 2nd)
UBC: Kindree, (16:09 2nd), Mutala, (2:39 2nd PP), Lambos, (17:10 3rd)
Goalies-UBC, Schweibus (20 shots-18 saves). Mac, Abel (33 shots-30 saves).

UBC‛s shaky pre-season finishes at 3-2-1, their only wins over Simon Fraser (BCIHL), Holy Trinity (2nd season out of BCIHL), and now MacEwan (2nd season out of ACAC). MacEwan finishes at 1-5-1.

The Dinos have turned around a shaky pre-season and finish at 3-3-0. The Mutts at least got a point to finish at 3-2-1.

The Evil Monkeys built a 3-0 lead before the Bluegars rallied. The MRU Twitter link has the best information. After two periods, Alberta held a 3-1 lead but MRU held a 20-16 edge in shots and one would have to think that the gap widened in that 3rd period comeback. Spencer Moe notched the winner. I don‛t remember Alberta being outshot very often in the past, even when they lost. The pre-season ends with the Monkeys at a very good 6-1-1 and the Bluegars at 4-2-0. These two face each other in a home-and-home series of significance.
