It’s the Bison home opener, but I’ll be watching on CWTV due to The Vaxx policy.

In 2019-20 UBC fell into 7th place in January before closing strong, overtaking Regina for 6th, overtaking Manitoba for 5th, defeating MRU in the quarter-finals, and upsetting Alberta in the semi-finals. This got them a berth in the U-Cup, which preceded dissapointment in losing to Sask in the final and being felled by a Covid cancellation on the eve of their first game in the nationals.

UBC’s run to the nationals has boosted their image in the minds of some observers. While I congratulate them on their achievement, I call for caution. As per my team previews, their recruiting class was so-so and seems enough to adequately replace the departures. I see them as being about the same as 2019-20. Fortunately for them, they will get six games against Holy Trinity. That factor will likely get them a playoff berth, even if their season turns a little wonky for some reason.

Looking at this year, the T-irds will play a team from outside British California for the first time on Friday night. Their record thus far is 3 wins over BCIHL teams, 2 wins over Holy Trinity in the Captain’s Cup, and two more wins over Holy Trinity in the regular season. That is the softest 7 game stretch that any CW team has had in the last 40 years, maybe ever. I suspect that their players and coaches are well aware of this and are itching to show what they have to offer against tougher competition.

The Bisons were led last weekend by defenceman Reece Harsch (4 assists) and forwards Colton Veloso (2 goals and 1 assist), Tony Apetagon (2 goals), and Dylan Thiessen (2 assists). Liam Hughes played both games in goal, with good stats (1-1-0, 3.00 GAA, .906 S%). Both the Bisons and Dinos were breaking in a host of newcomers with mixed results. Nevertheless, a split in the Town of Bedrock is nothing to sneeze at. Like Mrs. Vilviachi’s cabbage rolls and coffee!

UBC has nine players with one goal each, nobody with two. Matt Revel (1-3-4) and Jonathan Smart (1-2-3) lead the scoring. Rylan Toth played both games in goal, and allowed just one goal. If Toth can keep this stretch going, it would help the T-irds immensely.

This home-and-home series will start in Saskatown on Friday then finish in Regina on Saturday. Both games start at 7:00 CST/8:00 CDT. The two universities also have a big football game on Saturday. So expect loads of banjo music, watermelon hats, and moonshine. This rivalry may be losing some pizzazz. Regina has 16 straight losses to Sask, none in OT. On the one hand, the Canines won 12-1 in the pre-season. On the other, the Felines are due.

The bad news is that this series has been postponed due to multiple positive Covid tests at MacEwan. (This despite the CW requirement that all players be double-vaxxed, making this a multiple fail.) The CW left spaces for make-up games, but dates have not been announced.

In brighter news, Mutant forward Riley Brandt was named the CW’s player of the week for his 3 goals and one assist performance. Not surprisingly, he was Mac’s first star across all sports. Four stories are linked.

The Bluegars are coming off a split against the Evil Monkeys, but that second game turned into a dud after the first period. The Bluegars need sweeps of series like this if they want to move into the elite category of the CW. Holy Trinity, I’m afraid, will be looking for moral victories here and there. These are their first ever CW home games so it will be a special occasion. Friday night’s game starts at 7:00 PDT/9:00 CDT and Saturday is at 7:15 PDT/9:15 CDT. With the Jets playing Saturday at 6:00 on HNIC, this could be a game I could focus upon.

Each team scored on a powerplay in the 1st (Skoleski for Manitoba, Miller for UBC), and there was no scoring in the 2nd, and the shots were even at 21-21. Then things went crazy.

There was a 40 minute wait to start the 3rd period because the Zamboni broke down. So the backup was called in. Then UBC scored a pair of goals, by Benjafield and Sandhu. The 3-1 goal was controversial in that they ran over Liam Hughes in the Bison net. No penalty, goal stood. Hughes stayed in for another couple of minutes but then had to leave the game. Jameson made it 3-2, Rask made it 4-2, and Thiessen made it 4-3, and that was your final. The Bison PP was 2-for-6, UBC’S was 1-for-5.

Rylan Toth got the win in goal for UBC, stopping 31 of 34 shots. Hughes stopped 24 of 27 shots, but Link was deemed to take the loss for giving up one goal on five shots. (I prefer the baseball rule.)

There were more lineup changes than usual for this rematch. With Liam Hughes injured, Jeremy Link started and Brett Murphy backed up in goal. On defence, Sam Stewart came back from injury and replaced Garrett Sambrook. Up front, Noah Basarab and Codey Behun drew in for Ben Dalke and Michael King for their first starts of the season. Meanwhile UBC chose to start Ethan Anders in goal and replaced defenceman Logan Foster with forward James Orban. Here?s how they lined up:

In this one the Bisons would score and then the Birds tie it up, up until overtime. Jake Kryski took a 4-minute slough footing penalty in overtime. However a blueline turnover resulted in a 2-on-1 breakaway which was converted by Chris Douglas for the Birds. The Bisons were a respectable 2-for-8 on the PP, so this is not quite the time to panic over the Bisons PP reverting to 2019-20 form. The fact that UBC tied the game to force overtime with just 2:15 remaining has to rankle the Bisons. There's a huge difference between being 2-2-0 and UBC at 3-1-0 that the existing 1-2-1 vs. 4-0-0. Linden McCorrister scored twice for the Bisons and defenceman Jarrett Tyszka scored twice for UBC.

Quick summary:

Waiting until after the Jets v Kings game to start my preview post made for a late night. So here we go.

Sask has to be concerned after having their second game against Regina cancelled last Saturday. All we know is that “multiple” kittens tested positive for Covid. Hopefully the Banjo-Mutts are healthy for their trip to civilization.

Of concern for the Bisons is the health of starting goaltender Liam Hughes. He was injured last Friday. Although backup goaltender Jeremy Link played well, they would like both available. Up front, four Bisons have a PPG (Veloso, Davis, Hartje, Harsch) and Cy Young numbers are coming from three more (Apetagon 2-1 and Jameson and McCorrister 2-0 each). Devon Skoleski’s 1-2-3 results last weekend got him AoW honours as well.

Not much can be said about Sask’s stats with just a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Regina on their slate.

I’m not sure about the audio link. UMFM’s website has not been updated for Bison schedules since 2019-20, but live streams were referenced in last week’s CWTV video stream.

In a scheduling quirk, the Bisons host the Mutts in hockey and football (a first place showdown) this weekend.

The Dinos had a Covid-enforced bye week last weekend, while the Bluegars had to slap around Holy Trinity in a pair of one-sided games. This should be a good series to watch. Both of these teams have been trying to move into the upper echelons of the CW and if one could sweep here it would give them a big edge.

The Bison line-up had just one change from Friday, with Michael King in for Codey Behun. Sask switched starting goaltenders and on the blue line it was Olson for Fiala.

The Bison injured list grew by one with Linden McCorrister limping off the ice. Neither leading defenceman Chase Hartje nor leading goaltender Liam Hughes dressed for either game this series.

Coach Babcock is developing a team which will be difficult to defeat. They choked off the Bisons from every angle. They don't give up a lot of shots.

Yup, the Banjo-Cats beat the Evil Monkeys! In Edmontown, no less. I see that after playing short one man Friday, Alberta played two Apes short in this one. Covid? Injuries? I heard nothing. I must add that although I had a screen with this one on, I never heard much of the play-by-play where something about this might have been said. I saw most of this one on CWTV. The Mythical Mutants had a better game than on Friday, but the Dinos definitely seemed in control throughout. The win lifts Bedrock U to 4-2-0 whilst Mac falls to 2-4-0. The good news is that with this game being played, no games postponed by Covid remain to be rescheduled.

On the Covid subject, the CW has not released (as far as I am aware) the numbers on positive tests for vaxxed players. A week ago, 43 vaxxed NHLers (6% of the league) had tested positive. All we know is that "multiple" players at MacEwan and Regina were positive and their games were postponed. Whether individual players on other teams have tested positive, we don't know.

Preview: November 12-13: MANITOBA at REGINA

Last week was a conference bye week, into which postponed games due to Covid were rescheduled. This week, there is twist in Saudi Alberta where opponent-swapping will occur between Friday and Saturday nights. Also, this is the beginning of standard time for everybody.

I linked a story from the U of M website, not the sports website, about the wonderful academic record of Bison athletes last year. 188 out of 360 qualified as Academic All-Canadian, including 12 players from men’s hockey:

Noah Basarab, University 1
Carter Doerksen, Asper School of Business
Mitchell Dyck, Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management
Keaton Jameson, Asper School of Business
Geordie Keane, Faculty of Science
Nicholas Labossiere, Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management
Jeremy Link, Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management
Hayden Ostir, University 1
Brady Pouteau, University 1
Liam Schioler, University 1
Samuel Stewart, University 1
Dylan Thiessen, Faculty of Science

Regina was also delighted that most of their athletes have mastered crayons, and in fact many have moved on to finger painting. Also, it is rumoured that four players on their women’s basketball team can count to 10 without using their fingers. Things are really looking up over there.

The Bison record is somewhat deceptive. IMO, Sask is playing better than anybody right now and they swept the Bisons. However, the Bisons equalled Calgary and UBC and both are ranked Top Ten in USports and OHT35. Of concern would be the injuries incurred. Leading goaltender Liam Hughes was hurt in game 3 (although Jeremy Link has done well in relief) and leading defenceman Chase Hartje was also hurt against UBC. Linden McCorrister (3 goals in 6 games) left early in the last game against Sask.

The Banjo-Cats ended their losing streak against Alberta when Brandon Holtby posted a 50-save shutout. Otherwise, they are 0-fer this year.

This is the mismatch of the weekend. Sask is playing better than anyone right now and Holy Trinity have looked overmatched against UBC and MRU. Both games are at 7:00 CT. Any points TWU can achieve this weekend would be a bonus for them.

This year’s CW schedule includes a round-robin of two-game series against each opponent (for 16 games) plus four games within your region. In Alberta, the Edmonton teams and Calgary teams have an extra two-game series against their cross-town rival. Then the Edmonton teams and Calgary teams cross-over for one additional game each. And this is the weekend for the latter phenomenon. I do not recall a CW team playing two different opponents on one weekend. All games are in Calgary.

FRIDAY GAMES

This is Friday at 7:00 MT/8:00 CT. The Evil Monkeys are just 2-2-0, however they got goalied by Regina and a split with MRU is hardly a disaster. Calgary also had splits with MRU and Manitoba, and swept MacEwan. I also added a link to the game story from October 30th, which was not available when I posted that night.

This one is also Friday at 7:00 MT/8:00 CT. These teams have both moved over from the ACAC and this will be their first meeting as CW teams. Thus far, Mac was swept by UBC and Calgary and another sweep from MRU would not shock the rest of the CW. MRU cannot be overlooking this game whilst waiting for the Evil Monkeys on Saturday.

SATURDAY GAMES

The Edmonton teams do a quick swing your partner do-si-do so as to change partners for Saturday night’s hoedown. Both games are at 6:00 MT/7:00 CT. There are no links specifically previewing Saturday games.

ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS (2-2-0, 10-4-0, OHT35 #2)
MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS (4-2-0, 7-4-1, OHT35 #5)

These teams split their first regular series. This will be their final meeting of the season. This could end up being the tie-breaking game in the final standings.

MACEWAN GRIFFINS (2-4-0, 4-8-0, OHT35 #23)
CALGARY DINOSAURS (4-2-0, 8-7-0, OHT35 #8)

Bedrock U just finished sweeping the Mythical Mutants, so this is a scheduling quirk. Mac could be under severe pressure in the event they lose on Friday.

Goalies-Manitoba, Link (36 shots-33 saves). Regina, Holtby (39 shots-37 saves).

Good to see that Hartje was dressed, and that Hughes recovered at least enough to backup in goal. However, McCorrister was a no-go. Apetagon was also not dressed and I don’t know if that was injury-related or not.

All five goals were at the same end of the rink, and originated in the face-off circle to the right of the goaltender.

This was one the Bisons just let get away from them. The first period could have been much better than a 2-0 lead. The shots were claimed to be 15-13, but Regina’s 13 was somewhat generous. In any event, the result allows Regina to jump one point ahead of Manitoba pending Saturday’s result. Suddenly, that becomes a very big game for the Bisons.

In a day where I had to fit in a pile of international rugby, football, snow clearing, and AEW Wrestling, about all I could do with this game is catch the last two periods in the background. It was similar to Friday's game. The lineup changes were Hughes for Link in goal, Keane (making his first start of the season) and Doerksen in, Basarab and Behun out. That adds up to 11 forwards and 7 defencemen. The last goal was an empty-netter, so this is quite a stretch of de facto one-goal losses.

The injury bug has devastated the Bisons. Three top forwards (Davis, Skoleski, and McCorrister) were absent. They accounted for 8 of the 18 Bison goals headed into this game. The difference was on the powerplay. MRU went 3-for-7 and the Bisons were 0-for-4. Here’s how they lined up:

20 Tarzwell - 8 Moe - 9 Regnier
10 Holmes - 21 Richards - Lindgren

Scratches
11 Fyten - 22 Arnold
27 Shamray - 31 Wray

Quick Summary
MRU: R. Sawchuk (05:54 1st) , N. Yaremko (12:31 2nd) , B. Kennedy (19:23 2nd) , N. Yaremko (12:55 3rd)
Man: D. Thiessen (08:41 3rd)
Goalies-Mount Royal, Morris (22 shots-21 saves). Manitoba, Hughes (35 shots-31 saves).

The Bluegars have a real reliance on their top line. It seemed they played every 2nd shift. Through 9 games, Yaremko is 11-7-18, Sawchuk is 7-10-17, and Kennedy is 3-5-8. They add Lindgren (1-9-10) on the powerplay and Yaremko and Sawchuk also killed some penalties. On defence, it seemed that Walker or Jensen were always out there, with one of the other defencemen on their “line”. Two players have left their program, forwards Ty Kolle and Keegan Iverson, leaving them with just 24 players.

MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 4
MANITOBA BISONS 5
(in overtime)

Links:
➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW
➤ Game reports: LeagueStat : CW
➤ UofM: Davis scores in OT, finishing comeback win for Bisons men over MRU (with boxscore and video)
➤ MRU: Team Website

The Bisons welcomed back to their line-up forwards Brett Davis and Devon Skoleski and defenceman Sam Stewart on Saturday afternoon, and it make a big difference to the game. That a new set of jerseys. They were light beige with a Ranger-style "BISONS" printed diagonally across the front. I'd prefer the bison head logo, but I like the unique colour. To make room, Apetagon, Basarab, and Pierce were scratched, resulting in 11 forwards and 7 d-men in the line-up. For the Bluegars Arnold (a forward) was in for Kleiboer (a defenceman) to return a 12/6 roster split.

MRU has the most top-heavy roster in the CW. They have the top two scorers, and four of the top six. Only one goal (their 4th on Staurday) was scored by somebody off their top line. In 10 games, these are their numbers:
Yaremko 13-7-20
Sawchuk 7-12-19
Kennedy 4-6-10
Lindgren 1-9-10

Quick Summary
MRU: N. Yaremko (06:02 1st) , B. Kennedy (09:23 1st) , N. Yaremko (00:16 2nd) , R. Holmes (04:31 3rd)
Man: D. Skoleski (16:10 1st) , R. Carlson (01:13 2nd) , B. Davis (05:22 3rd) , K. Jameson (08:44 3rd) , B. Davis (00:35 1st OT)
Goalies-Mount Royal, Morris 4-1-1-0 (30 shots-25 saves). Manitoba, Hughes 2-3-0-0 (31 shots-27 saves).

With some returning players, the Bisons did blend their lines, pairing Veloso with Jameson and Davis with Skoleski. I admit I wasn't able to watch this game as intently as Friday's game. I had multiple games going on multiple screens all day. Things started at 7:00 a.m. with a rugby quadruple-header and the last game (France v All-Blacks) overlapped with this game and the Hardy Cup footall final (Bisons lost).

The Bluegars held leads of 2-0, 3-1, and 4-2. While the game was generally even, the Bisons did control most of the late stages. Davis scored at even strength in the 3rd period to cut MRU's lead to 4-3. In mid-period, Veloso picked up a turnover while shorthanded and scurried up ice on a breakaway. Morris made the save, but Jameson picked it up behind the net and scored on a wrap-around. Near the end of the game, with referee's whistles firmly in pockets, MRU took a too many men on the ice penalty (each side had one of these earlier). The powerplay continued into overtime where Brett Davis scored his second of the night and sixth of the season.

The Bisons are now 2-7-1 and MRU is 6-3-1. Next weekend, the Bisons travel to Alberta to wrap the 1st semester. MRU has a bye week. This marks the half-way point of the Bison schedule. In the new year, just four series will remain: Hosting Mac, visiting Trinity, hosting Regina, and visiting Sask. It gets late early.

I saw a good chunk of this game in conjunction with HNIC and CFL football. The Mutts took 5-minute majos in the 2nd and 3rd periods so Bedrock U might be missing injured players next weekend. On the night, the Dinos were 0-for-8 on the PP, including those two 5-minute jobs. Sask was 0-for-5 themselves. The Dinos are now 6-3-1 and this was Sask's first loss, now 7-1-0.

With the out-of-town games staggered nicely, I caught this one in progress after the game from Bedrock was over. The T-irds had an early 2-0 lead. The Evil Monkeys really did take control of the game and built a 4-2 lead. Two first year Monkeys had two goals each (Daneel Lategan, 6-0-6, and Gary Haden, 4-4-8). The Monkeys still don't seem themselves but are still 6-2-0. The T-irds are 6-1-1. Things will be telling for them once they play MRU, Calgary, and Saskatchewan.

This game rounded off my viewing pleasure on a busy Saturday. Regina won easily, having a 5-1 3rd period lead before Holy Trinity mounted a mini-rally. I believe that Trinity's 35 shots were a season high. TWU falls to 0-8-0 and Regina is 5-5-0.

The Bisons have struggled early, and a trip to Edmontown to face the Evil Monkeys is not a cure for a slump. But with some injured players having returned last Saturday, the squad is getting better. There was no preview story from either side.

The Herd needed to get at least a split to finish the 1st semester, and now they have that and will push for a sweep on Saturday night. First, here's how the teams lined up:

MANITOBA
Goal
30 Hughes (35 Murphy)

Defence
5 Schioler - 6 Dyck
16 Hartje - 3 Harsch
4 Anderson - 27 Doerksen - 2 Stewart

Forwards
14 Keane - 12 Jameson - 17 Veloso
10 Skoleski - 23 Davis - 22 Ostir
26 McCorrister - 9 Thiessen - 19 Halvorsen
11 Carlson - 15 Dalke

Scratches
20 Apetagon - 21 Basarab - 24 Pierce
25 Sambrook - 28 Behun - 29 King
31 Link

ALBERTA

Goal
1 Burman - 31 Schneider

Defence
4 Kirichenko - 6 Freadrich
7 Plouffe - 3 Lakusta
8 McLeod - 22 Sakowich

Forwards
15 Lategan - 16 Pawlenchuk - 17 Fonteyne
14 Florchuk - 18 Hughes - 23 Haden
20 Volcan - 29 Paterson - 24 Savenkov (D)
10 Prokop - 11 Preziuso - 25 Smith

Scratches
5 Davidson - 26 Wolski - 27 Miske
30 Bennett - 35 Berlin - 37 Trolley

This was as wild and crazy as one would expect a 7-6 game to be. The Bisons lead four times, only to see the Evil Monkeys tie it up each time. The Apes led just once, 1-0 after two minutes.

Bison scorers were defencemen Harsch and Stewart (with their firsts of the season), Skoleski with his 3rd and 4th, and Davis with his 7th, 8th, and 9th, including the overtime winner. Haden's two goals led the Monkeys. That's overtime winners in two straight games for Davis.

There were some dubious calls and non-calls. Liam Hughes knocked over at least six times in the Bison goal. I feared he was re-injured on one occasion. The Apes had five PPs to one for the Bisons, although each side had one goal on the PP.

Alberta falls to 6-2-1 and Manitoba improves to 3-7-1.

Quick summary:
Man: R. Harsch (02:53 1st) , S. Stewart (03:46 1st) , B. Davis (04:26 2nd) , B. Davis (07:14 2nd) , D. Skoleski (15:59 2nd) , D. Skoleski (01:30 3rd) , B. Davis (00:25 1st OT)
Alta: G. Haden (02:42 1st) , G. Pawlenchuk (11:58 1st) , R. Hughes (06:04 2nd) , G. Haden (08:43 2nd) , E. Florchuk (11:06 3rd) , J. Paterson (16:36 3rd)
Goalies-Manitoba, Hughes 3-3-0-0 (40 shots-34 saves). Alberta, Burman 3-1-0-0 (15 shots-9 saves); Schneider 3-0-1-0 (4 shots-3 saves).

Of note, Alberta laws restrict the Clare Drake Arena to 1,000 spectators. And that's what they had.

There were very few changes from Friday night for the Evil Monkeys, none for the Bisons. In goal, they started Schneider with Berlin at backup, and traded Wolski for Smith on their 4th line.

The score is not reflective of the game. It was a 3-2 game 12 minutes into the 3rd when they called a silly interference penalty on Brett Davis (he was standing still and hit a Monkey crossing the blueline). The Monkeys scored on the ensuing PP, and later added two empty-netters.

Alberta is now 7-2-1 and Manitoba falls to 3-8-1. In a shortened 20-game season, the Bisons' remaining games are:
Jan 14-15 host MacEwan
Jan 21-22 at Trinity Western
