I see that Jaime Nye is predicting that Trevor Harris will be the CFL’s MOP in 2020. Nye was correct last year in predicting that Brandon Banks would be the MOP in 2019.

:-\

Good news here but I will remain cautiously optimistic on Harris and it’s not his head or his arm or the offensive line.

We must have a better receiving corps with at least one deep threat or again won’t go far with another offence great at only dink and dunk for the passing game.

Hmmmm. The Eskimos started to take a lot of flak for their “dink and dunk” passing game and not having a deep threat when they started to struggle this past year. Let’s see whether that hypothesis is confirmed by a quick look at the stats. The Eskimos had four receivers among the top 25 in receiving yardage in 2019:

Greg Ellingson - 86 receptions for an avg. of 13.6 yards per reception with a long of 54 yards
Ricky Collins - 78 for 14.1 with a long of 83
DaVaris Daniels - 54 for 13.7 with a long of 59
Tevaun Smith - 55 for 11.5 with a long of 75

For the top 25 receivers overall the average gain per reception was 13.13 yards with an average long of 62.76 yards. For the four Eskimos the average gain was 13.34 yards with an average long of 67.75 yards.

The stats don’t actually back up the chat. Therefore the wide receivers might not have been the problem.

Here though are the average gain per completion stats for some of the top QBs in 2019:

Cody Fajardo - 12.73 yards
Trevor Harris - 11.74 yards
McLeod Bethel-Thompson - 12.01 yards
Vernon Adams Jr. - 13.93 yards
Mike Reilly - 12.10 yards
Dane Evans - 12.60 yards
Bo Levi Mitchell - 12.64
Logan Kilgore - 10.52 yards

The Eskimo QBs were definitely on the low side as far as yards per completion was concerned. But since it wasn’t due to the receivers running short patterns, it seems that the Esks’ QBs were throwing outlet passes to their RBs more often.

:-\

Great data there that backs up the opposite conclusion - of course to get really nerdy, one I suppose could dig into the red zone data for the same receiving corps and find the underwhelming results with an abundance of short field goals.

The standings with more losses and missed opportunities, and not championship form ever since 2015 when winning it all, speak for themselves on that one.

And so perhaps improving the receiving corps for the red zone would be more accurate and continue to keep the dink and dunk off the field.

There’s no issue with check-down passes to running backs - it’s the YAC on those that matters even more anyway.

Another stat they have on the NFL site that they don’t on the CFL site that I can find is Over 20 and Over 40 for QBs and for the receivers too

Like TDs to INTs + Fumbles Lost and TDs, that stat is one of many that can distinguish and explain a far more successful quarterback or receiver even with similar or lower numbers than another one higher up on the stats page.

So I see that RB Shaq Cooper resigned with the Eskimos for another year. He’s been quite good when he’s gotten a chance to play. I wonder when he’ll be given a bigger role.

???

Beard and draft a young centre to compete with him.

Joesph, especially if both Boateng and Betts end up starting.

Unamba, plays SAM and can also play in the secondary.

Yup. When he got his chances he was off the hook. He is going and healthy. All signs point his way. Jmo

I count 35 free agents on the list and our management team has resigned 2 !? Gimme a break! Time to get this show on the road. I’ve been a season ticket holder for 32 yrs and a fan of this team for a lot more but I’m starting to lose patience with management. Maybe I’m just getting old.

I agree and whatever your age, I think you are right on track here sir.

So if the Toronto Argonauts sign either Nick Arbuckle or Matt Nichols to a contract and then cut James Franklin loose, should the Edmonton Eskimos resign Franklin as their backup QB?

???

I say yes. He can have one more shot where he did well already. It’s not like he is old.

They could do a lot worse. He’d be a big step up from Kilgore.

C.J. Gable! Should he be re-signed or is he too far beyond his “best before” date?

???

CJ is still a good back, I think that you bring him to camp and let him play himself off or onto the roster.

Any chance they re-sign Davaris Daniels, or he simply asks too much?

This with new negotiating window which ended today.
These are the type of things we are going to find out with players at the level of Daniels.
Keep a close eye on 3 Down Nation site. Already today we are already seeing players already making such a decision. After the Window Clock struck midnite.

Just read they resigned Kilgore, I think they could have done much better. >:(

Well i doubt the signing of Kilgore will end the search for someone better. He was the only other QB they had aside from Harris from last year.
What he does bring is the knowledge of the Milanovich system from playing in Toronto. With Maas a QB coach in Toronto during that era. Was there with Harris as well as Rickey Ray.
Also that The Esks basically only dressed two QBs in harris and Kilgore as the back up. So Kilgore was the holder for the entire season. Over looked but very important to the Long Snapper, Holder, Place Kicker. That needs to be a fine piled machine.

Maybe and they played it conservative. Now I figure get that receiving corps and defensive back eight right.

And go on and sign a third QB for the Jumbo Team like we used to have with what was his name.

There are not going to be “CFL Practice Police” on duty 24/7. That whole notion for sake of QB practice is not only dumb but also laughable.

There is no rule, as I think has been reported incorrectly, against having a third QB on a team however he is counted in the tally in any given week during the season.
