2018 OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 27: USPORTS FOOTBALL

OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 27 - PRE-SEASON/WEEK 1

Where did summer go so fast? For me this is the summer that never was. I had an operation in May and haven’t left the house much since. I’m going to my first baseball game of the season Monday!

The regular season has started out east, and the CW starts net weekend. That means the first, and VERY preliminary, ranking is due out … right NOW!

The first major announcement is, as always, the source of inspiration for the most authoritative ranking in university football. And this year it is my future bride: EUGENIE BOUCHARD! Mark my words. When she sees the opportunity to have advance knowledge of the weekly rankings she will come to her senses and finally overlook that age difference thing.

STEP 2: REGIONAL RANKINGS

The rankings show each team’s conference record followed by their overall record. The games marked # are non-conference games. The games marked * are games against a jabroni.

CANADA WEST

1 Calgary (0-0, 1-0) beat Alta#
2 Regina (0-0, 1-0) beat Man#
3 Manitoba (0-0, 0-1) lost Reg#
4 Alberta (0-0, 0-1) lost Cal#
n/r Saskatchewan (0-0, 0-0)
n/r UBC (0-0, 0-0)

The fact that all of the eastern conferences have an odd number of teams means that they all get a jump on things with pre-Labour Day weekend match-ups. Still, I’m ready to make the call that Calgary will finish ahead of Alberta this year.

ONTARIO

1 W. Ontario (1-0, 1-0) beat Carl
2 Laurier (1-0, 2-0) beat McG# Ott
3 McMaster (1-0, 1-0) beat Gue
4 Queen’s (1-0, 2-0) beat Wat# York
5 Waterloo (1-0, 1-1) beat Wind lost Que#
6 Ottawa (0-1, 0-1) lost Laur
7 Carleton (0-1, 0-2) lost Mtl# UWO
8 Guelph (0-1, 0-2) lost Lav# McM
9 Windsor (0-1, 0-1) lost Wat
10 York (0-1, 0-2) lost Con# Que
n/r Toronto (0-0, 0-0)

Funny that Toronto had the bye and no exhibition game either. I guess they’ll reach jabroni status later than usual this year. Also funny that only one team (Waterloo) has a split of exhibition and regular season games.

QUEBEC

1 Laval (1-0, 2-0) beat Gue# Sher
2 Montreal (1-0, 2-0) beat Carl# McG
3 Sherbrooke (0-1, 1-1) beat Bish# lost Lav
4 Concordia (0-0, 1-0) beat York#
5 McGill (0-1, 0-2) lost Laur# Mtl

Really hard to gauge Concordia and McGill right now. I suspect the usual 2-team conference in Quebec.

ATLANTIC

1 Saint Mary’s (1-0, 2-0) beat MtA# SFX
2 Acadia (0-0, 1-0) beat SFX#
3 Mount Allison (1-0, 1-1) beat Bish lost SMU#
4 St. FX (0-1, 0-2) lost Aca# SMU
5 Bishop’s (0-1, 0-2) lost Sher# MtA

Were any of the results appealed to the courts? If so, did the court toss them out on grounds of jabroniism? Somebody needs to step up out here.

STEP 3: THE BLEND

OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 27 - WEEK 2

Well now that every team has played a regular season game, this is the first full-fledged ranking of the season. Eugenie must have been busy at the U.S. Open, because she hasn’t yet called. My hunch is that she’ll be looking for my phone number after she reads this week’s ranking.

3 UBC (1-0, 1-0) beat Man
4 Regina (0-1, 1-1) beat Man# lost Cal
5 Manitoba (0-1, 0-2) lost Reg# UBC
6 Alberta (0-1, 0-2) lost Cal# Sask

Do I believe that Sask is #1? No! However, the results are what they are. A loss to Manitoba on Friday and they would tumble to #5. But for now, they are ridin’ high. Break out the possum shanks!

She would be puzzled when first seeing the CW rankings. We’ll laugh about it on our honeymoon.

ONTARIO

1 Laurier (2-0, 3-0) beat McG# Ott Que
2 W. Ontario (1-0, 1-0) beat Carl
3 Ottawa (1-1, 1-1) beat McM lost Laur
4 Carleton (1-1, 1-2) beat Wind lost Mtl# UWO
5 McMaster (1-1, 1-1) beat Gue lost Ott
6 Queen’s (1-1, 2-1) beat Wat# York lost Laur
7 Guelph (1-1, 1-2) beat York lost Lav# McM
8 Waterloo (2-0, 2-1) beat Wind Tor lost Que#
9 York (0-2, 0-3) lost Con# Que Gue
10 Toronto (0-1, 0-1) lost Wat
11 Windsor (0-2, 0-2) lost Wat Carl

With 11 teams, a lot of this is based on margins of victories. Odd that some of these teams have 1 GP, whilst others have 3.

Sports Illustrated might start a Canadian edition just to get the OHT27.

QUEBEC

1 Laval (2-0, 2-0) beat Gue# Sher Con
2 Montreal (1-0, 2-0) beat Carl# McG
3 McGill (1-1, 1-2) beat Sher lost Laur# Mtl 0
4 Sherbrooke (0-2, 1-2) beat Bish# lost Lav McG
5 Concordia (0-1, 1-1) beat York# lost Lav

Quebec has two leagues - one with 2 teams and the other with 3. Will any of the bottom 3 win even 1 game against the top 2? Genie would rather watch basketball!

It is important to look good in every sport.

ATLANTIC

1 Saint Mary’s (2-0, 3-0) beat MtA# SFX Bish
2 Mount Allison (1-0, 1-1) beat Bish lost SMU#
3 St. FX (1-1, 1-2) beat Aca lost Aca# SMU
4 Acadia (0-1, 1-1) beat SFX# lost SFX
5 Bishop’s (0-2, 0-3) lost Sher# MtA SMU

We have our first reversal. Acadia beat SFX in the pre-season and SFX won the regular season rematch.

Poor Genie looks chilly.

OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 27 - WEEK 3

This was the week where the OHT27 came into focus. To me, the biggest question is regarding that mid-pack of the OUA. If it weren’t for glances at Eugenie’s fabulous smile, I don’t think I could have completed this ranking. We have her to thank!

I want Eugenie looking classy like this on our Honeymoon.

6 Alberta (0-2, 0-3) lost Cal# Sask Reg

Margins of victory allow Calgary/Sask and Regina/UBC to swap spots. There should be a lot of great games in the next 6 rounds.

Eugenie must have been tired after watching almost 100 points in the Man/Sask game.

ONTARIO

1 Laurier (2-0, 3-0) beat McG# Ott Que

10 Toronto (0-2, 0-2) lost Wat Que
11 Windsor (0-3, 0-3) lost Wat Carl York

The Jackasses gets a very narrow nod over the Urban Cowboys. The Ottawa/Carleton, McMaster/Queen’s, and Guelph/Waterloo choices were also very narrow.

What a smile!

4 Concordia (1-1, 2-1) beat York# Sher lost Lav
5 Sherbrooke (0-3, 1-3) beat Bish# lost Lav McG Con

This is hard to rank because nobody is sure who won Laval v Montreal. Everybody who was there fell asleep. That looks to be a good race for 3rd place, though. The burning question is whether all three of those teams should be Ham’n’Eggers, or in The Blob. For now, it’s The Blob.

The cut-offs are an homage to last year’s Daisy Duke theme.

OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 27 - WEEK 4

At long last, the OUA is producing the fireworks. Waterloo’s big win over Laurier shakes things up. Had Queen’s won in OT against Carleton, things would have gone really bonkers. Here we are at Week 4 already, and everybody now has at least 3 regular season games under their belts.

Nice shoes! Aren’t those the first things you notice on a woman?

5 Manitoba (1-2, 1-3) beat Alta lost Reg# UBC Sask
6 Alberta (0-3, 0-4) lost Cal# Sask Reg Man

No change! 1 beat 2, 3 beat 4, and 5 beat 6. 'Nuff said. (IMO all games between the middle four teams will be toss-ups. That must shock the pundits who were so big on UBC.)

Those sandy beach pictures always make my day.

ONTARIO

1 W. Ontario (3-0, 3-0) beat Carl McM York*
2 Carleton (3-1, 3-2) beat Wind* Wat Que lost Mtl# UWO
3 Waterloo (3-1, 3-2) beat Wind* Tor* Laur lost Que# Carl
4 Laurier (2-1, 3-1) beat McG# Ott Que lost Wat
5 Ottawa (2-1, 2-1) beat McM Gue lost Laur

10 Toronto (0-3, 0-3) lost Wat Que McM
11 Windsor (0-4, 0-4) lost Wat Carl York* Gue

Waterloo’s win over Laurier creates the first rankings loop of the season. (Laurier beat Queen’s, and Queen’s beat Waterloo, albeit in pre-season.) Leaving out the exhibition result, we have a 9-team string:
UWO ≥ Carl > Wat > Laur > Ott > McM > Gue > York > Wind.

That leaves where to put Queen’s and Toronto. Queen’s could be anywhere from #3 to #7. Toronto? They and Windsor are “ugh?. Hopefully, the OUA will provide more “loops? in weeks to come.

The craziness of the OUA would make Eugenie happy.

QUEBEC

1 Laval (3-0, 4-0) beat Gue# Sher Con Mtl

3 Concordia (2-1, 3-1) beat York# Sher McG lost Lav
4 McGill (1-2, 1-3) beat Sher lost Laur# Mtl Con
5 Sherbrooke (0-4, 1-4) beat Bish*# lost Lav McG Con Mtl

Concordia is hard to rank. Not so much within the Q, but in comparison outside the conference. They are dead even with Montreal. But their wins have been narrow wins over teams Montreal destroyed. And they narrowly beat York in pre-season, while Montreal beat Carleton.

Eugenie looks great in casual attire.

ATLANTIC

1 Saint Mary’s (3-0, 4-0) beat MtA# SFX Bish* MtA
2 St. F.X. (2-1, 2-2) beat Aca Bish* lost Aca# SMU

4 Mount Allison (1-2, 1-3) beat Bish* lost SMU# SMU Aca
5 Bishop’s (0-4, 0-5) lost Sher# MtA SMU Aca SFX

Other then Bishop’s, the AUS seems to at least be competitive. My wishes for the conference are: A good race for the 3 playoff spots down to final game of the season, Bishop’s gets better next year, and none of the Maritime judiciary are involved in this year’s playoffs.

Don’t you just love the sly smile?

Laurier’s loss to Waterloo had a huge impact on the OUA’s internal and external rankings. Carleton’s OTL to Western Ontario and OTW over Queen’s makes them hard to rank as well. The OTL to Western Ontario makes them a potential contender. However, the OTW against Queen’s makes them appear mid-blob.

Guelph and York are funny. A case could be made that they are both Ham’n’Eggers. York could have moved up if they had a more respectable game against UWO. Guelph stays put with respectable losses against McMaster and Ottawa, but that squeaker against Windsor raises questions.

Concordia could move down a category if they are wasted by Montreal. McGill and Sherbrooke are now established as Ham’n’Eggers.

Up at the top, Laval will have just the one strong regular season opponent. The rest of their opponents are perhaps not much better than York. Evaluating UWO depends on how to evaluate Carleton, a team they beat in OT and who then beat Queen’s in OT, a team who lost to Laurier who lost to Waterloo. Perhaps another week will put those results in context.

The CW and AUS are relatively easy to rank. The toughest question is evaluating where SMU should fall in the national rankings. Saskatchewan would need to beat Regina to stay in the contender category next week.

The cold weather this weekend brings home just how close we are getting to the end of the football season. I even got to my first hockey game on the weekend. I get the impression that the OUA has many surprises coming our way, and that things are about to go crazy in the CW.

If Eugenie can play tennis in a dress, maybe Bishop’s could wear tuxedos!

STEP 2: REGIONAL RANKINGS

The rankings show each team’s conference record followed by their overall record. The games marked # are non-conference games. The games marked * are games against a jabroni.

CANADA WEST

1 Calgary (4-0, 5-0) beat Alta# Reg UBC Sask UBC
2 Saskatchewan (3-1, 3-1) beat Alta Man Reg lost Cal
3 Regina (2-2, 3-2) beat Man# Alta UBC lost Cal Sask
4 UBC (1-3, 1-3) beat Man lost Cal Reg Cal
5 Manitoba (2-2, 2-3) beat Alta Alta lost Reg# UBC Sask
6 Alberta (0-4, 0-5) lost Cal# Sask Reg Man Man

The whole conference now has a distinct ranking pattern, with no “loops?. This is very unusual for the CW. It looks like this:
Cal > Sask > Reg > UBC > Man > Alta

So even though Manitoba is ahead of UBC in the standings, the strength of schedule tips the balance. I wish the CW had a full round-robin in the first 5 weeks, followed by the first three weeks going in weeks 6, 7, and 8 for the return matches.

Saskatchewan answered the call and gets to stay in the Contenders category. It is about time for an unexpected result. The CW is overdue for one of those. UBC came close on Saturday night.

I hope Genie wears this on our honeymoon.

ONTARIO

1 W. Ontario (4-0, 4-0) beat Carl McM York* Wat
2 Carleton (4-1, 4-2) beat Wind* Wat Que Tor* lost Mtl# UWO
3 Ottawa (3-1, 2-1) beat McM Gue York* lost Laur
4 McMaster (3-2, 3-2) beat Gue Tor* Laur lost Ott UWO
5 Laurier (2-2, 3-2) beat McG# Ott Que lost Wat McM
6 Queen’s (3-2, 4-2) beat Wat# York* Tor* Gue lost Laur Carl
7 Waterloo (3-2, 3-3) beat Wind* Tor* Laur lost Que# Carl UWO
8 Guelph (2-3, 2-4) beat York* Wind* lost Lav# McM Ott Que
9 York (1-4, 1-5) beat Wind* lost Con# Que Gue UWO Ott
10 Toronto (0-4, 0-4) lost Wat Que McM Carl
11 Windsor (0-4, 0-4) lost Wat Carl York* Gue

The OUA is producing more fireworks week after week. There are now two “loops?, which involve five teams, Laurier being involved in both. Those are:

Wat > Laur > Que > Wat > Laur > Que etc.
McM > Laur > Ott > McM > Laur > Ott etc.

In games against those teams, Carleton has close wins and Guelph has close losses so far. So they slide into the #2 and #8 slots. But how about those five in the middle? None has a clear ranking edge. Due to the loops. So here are the relative records, leaving out UWO and the jabronis:

Carl 2-0
Ott 2-1
McM 2-1
Laur 2-2
Que 1-2, 2-2
Wat 1-1, 1-2
Gue 0-3

Guelph came really close to a relegation to the Ham’n’Egger category. However, they are saved by the margins of losses criteria. But they remain on alert.

Carleton could still gain promotion to Contender status.

Also, could York move up to Ham’n’Egger from Jabroni? The Waterloo game next week could be important in that regard.

The denim skirt is vastly under-rated.

QUEBEC

1 Laval (4-0, 5-0) beat Gue# Sher Con Mtl McG
2 Montreal (3-1, 4-1) beat Carl# McG Sher Con lost Lav
3 Concordia (2-2, 3-2) beat York*# Sher McG lost Lav Mtl
4 McGill (1-3, 1-4) beat Sher lost Laur# Mtl Con Lav
5 Sherbrooke (0-4, 1-4) beat Bish*# lost Lav McG Con Mtl

#2 Montreal whipping #3 Concordia shows emphatically that nobody in this league is in The Blob. Concordia is now in the Ham’n’Egger category. The pre-season results against OUA/AUS teams now look very appropriate, don’t they? Reminder:
Guelph 3 Laval 46
Montreal 24 Carleton 11
York 17 Concordia 23
Laurier 33 McGill 9
Sherbrooke 42 Bishop’s 0

Only wearing this outfit to an RSEQ game would make it interesting to watch.

ATLANTIC

1 Saint Mary’s (4-0, 5-0) beat MtA# SFX Bish* MtA Aca
2 St. F.X. (3-1, 3-2) beat Aca Bish* MtA lost Aca# SMU
3 Acadia (2-2, 3-2) beat SFX# Bish* MtA lost SFX SMU
4 Mount Allison (1-3, 1-4) beat Bish* lost SMU# SMU Aca SFX
5 Bishop’s (0-4, 0-5) lost Sher# MtA SMU Aca SFX

The first round-robin had everybody fall into place very nicely, just like the RSEQ. The difference is that the AUS has one doormat and the rest could easily reverse results next time around. A “loop? here would spice things up.

Even in the midst of competition, one should take the time to smile.

STEP 3: THE BLEND

“CONTENDERS”
1 Laval (4-0, 5-0) beat Gue# Sher Con Mtl McG
2 Montreal (3-1, 4-1) beat Carl# McG Sher Con lost Lav
3 W. Ontario (4-0, 4-0) beat Carl McM York* Wat

26 Windsor (0-4, 0-4) lost Wat Carl York* Gue
27 Bishop’s (0-4, 0-5) lost Sher# MtA SMU Aca SFX

Calgary slides a bit due to the margins of victory principle, which comes into play when there is a tightly wrapped group of teams with virtually no common opponents. Sask deserves to stick in the Contenders category, but they could easily lose games against teams from The Blob. I think the Top Four would have a hard time losing to such teams.

Carleton could jump from The Blob but they have been very hard to rank so far. So they are top of The Blob, and Guelph barely hangs on. In between we have the five OUA teams, who could be in any order with some justification due to the two loops, and the three CW teams and SMU are shuffled in there like shuffling a deck of cards.

It looks like the Ham’n’Eggers and Jabronis are destined to stay put, although York has some hope of an upward jump.

5 UBC (1-4, 1-4) beat Man lost Cal Reg Cal Alta
6 Alberta (1-4, 1-5) beat UBC lost Cal# Sask Reg Man Man

The CW got its first loop, and came very close to a second one (ended when Manitoba missed an OT 2-point convert). Against one another that loop looks like this:
Man 2-1
UBC 1-1
Alta 1-2

Was their upset over UBC a one-time loony-tune result? We’ll leave Alberta in the Ham’n’Eggers for now while we wait and see.

Imagine what Genie would look like had the Bison 2-point convert succeeded?

ONTARIO

Ontario now has loops which join #2-#9. However, York’s one-sided losses stop them from rising to The Blob, and they have vacated Jabroniism to become a Ham’n’Egger, and Waterloo is teetering between categories.

Down the stretch, OUA teams need to focus like Genie does.

Saskatchewan is bumped from The Contenders category, but stays at #5. There is not a solid delineation between #6 and #14. York’s win over Waterloo moves both into the Ham’n’Egger category.

In a good sign of some degree of parity outside the RSEQ, two Ham’n’Eggers (Waterloo and Alberta) have wins against The Blob so far this year. We are also now down to 3 jabronis.

So as the CW heads to a bye week, and Thanksgiving is coming, we get ready for the denouement of the season.

OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 27 - WEEK 7

Once upon a time, the CW was the only odd conference. But after STFU was relegated to playing Fran’s Pedicure College, Carleton came back, and Bishop’s moved east, it is now the only even conference. This allows one common bye week, and that happened over Thanksgiving. So this week we just see what happened out east.

What a smile!

Numbers 1, 9, 10, and 11 are easy. What about the rest? Here’s their head-to-head (bearing in mind that all lost every game to 1 and only Waterloo lost a game to 9, 10, and 11):
Ottawa 3-1
McMaster 3-2
Laurier 3-3
Carleton 2-2
Waterloo 2-1, 2-2 (and lost to York)

The win over McUniversity allows Waterloo to move back to The Blob.

Only looking at Eugenie in a bikini would prompt a reader to check out the RSEQ segment.

1 Laval (7-0, 8-0) beat Gue# Sher Con Mtl McG Con Mtl McG
2 Montreal (5-2, 6-2) beat Carl# McG Sher Con Sher Con lost Lav Lav
3 Concordia (2-4, 3-4) beat York# Sher McG lost Lav Mtl Lav Mtl
4 McGill (1-5, 1-6) beat Sher lost Laur# Mtl Con Lav Sher Lav
5 Sherbrooke (1-5, 2-5) beat Bish*# McG lost Lav McG Con Mtl Mtl

It might be worthwhile to recall the exhibition scores. IMO those games were a crystal ball into the season performances of the Q teams:
Guelph 3 Laval 46
Montreal 24 Carleton 11
York 17 Concordia 23
Laurier 33 McGill 9
Sherbrooke 42 Bishop’s 0

The AUS needs to concentrate on getting better, and Eugenie shows us how to concentrate.

5 Bishop’s (0-7, 0-8) lost Sher# MtA SMU Aca SFX MtA SMU Aca

I know. SMU is unbeaten. Good for them. That doesn’t mean they could beat a playoff team from elsewhere in Canada.

What’s better? This week’s rankings or this swimsuit?

UWO’s big win over Ottawa tips the scales at the top. But really the Top Three are all worthy, and Montreal is a fairly obvious #4. The hardest part of the ranking was finding a #5 team. Ottawa was smacked, Saskatchewan lost to UBC, and McMaster lost to Waterloo. So Regina it is. Waterloo was on their way to a Ham’n’Egger finish but the win over McUniversity salvages their place in The Blob. The SMUskies got another win so they hang in to The Blob as well.
