2015 Ti-Cats, CFL and other sports TV ratings

If you look at the CFL average ratings this year it's around 540,000 that's the dedicated fans that watch every game which is around 60,000 fans average per CFL city. These are the dedicated CFL fans that watch every game, just like most of us on these boards, we watch every game we don't tune out when our team is not playing.
When teams like Sask are playing on the road the numbers will be higher and the home teams probably lower. The Sask at Argos game would have attracted a lot of them extra Riders fans plus the casual fan that wants to see the Riders go winless, that explains the 864k.
Compare the 60k Argo average audience in TO, to the Jays viewership which is probably 1 million out of the 1.4 million. that's a huge number.
Expect huge Jays numbers when the casual band wagon jumpers start watching until the end of the season.

But summer CFL numbers are lower every year, the casual fans start tuning in on Labour day and for playoff games. Overall average TV ratings last year was 680k or 75k per CFL city.
The challenge is getting the casual fans back.

So at the home opener in TOR last week, Fans had to endure hour long lineups to get into the Stadium and missing some of the 1st QTR, even though the team knew there would be delays because of the MLB security metal detectors and the team understaffed, ill prepared and untrained!

LEAVE A COUPLE OF MINUTES EARLY!!

Toronto Argonauts ?@TorontoArgos
Reminder: There are now metal detectors at Rogers Centre entrances, so be sure to leave a couple minutes earlier for the game on Saturday!
2:03 PM - 6 Aug 2015

I wonder how many of the 20,00 fans will just stay home and watch on TV after this debacle?

"When fans arrived, they were met with long lineups and wait times that some said stretched for over an hour. The average wait time at Gate 11 was 20 minutes and longer at Gate 5, the Argos said.
Much of that had to do with understaffing, a lack of experienced staff and many who were in training, the Argos said.
There was an announced crowd of 20,642, but many of those missed some parts of the Argos’ 30-26 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
“While we have been assured that there will not be a repeat of these events, we will continue to encourage fans to plan ahead and arrive to the gates early so you don’t miss a minute of the game,? the Argos CEO said"

anybody ever wonder if the ratings are affected this year in particular and ever since the rule changes with the ridiculous amount of flags
The Argo game the other night was a total joke with almost 50 flags.
I can't watch that crap.
One of the worst new rules that only makes the game drag on is the review on pass interference it's becoming a joke and it will be the death of the CFL.

A Referee should have to answer yes to 2 of these 3 questions before throwing a flag.

  1. Did an infraction of the rules occur?
  2. Has a players safety been compromised?
  3. Did it have any affect on the outcome of the play?

The vast majority of those penalties were of the “normal” variety - positional, offsides, holding, illegal block, UR, OC, IP, and the like. Few, if any, fell into the “new rules” subset that you so vehemently decry.
In fact, FenderGuy69 has done some excellent research on 3DownNation http://3downnation.com/2015/07/15/flag-on-the-play/ that demonstrates the exact same thing. And to refute your point further, there were a paltry 12 (or so) flags in our game against WPG.

thread needed a negative bump. im the yang to TP’s ying.

Quit yanging my ying Ryan.

That’s crazy…eg. would anyone tune out a Olympic gold medal hockey game because of penalties? Or would crazy Leaf fans tune out because of the officials? …“NO REAL FANS WOULD”…It is very easy to point fingers!

Last night's @BlueJays game on @Sportsnet was the most-watched Blue Jays game in network history (1.44M), surpassing the 2013 Home Opener

WOOOOHOOOO!!!!!, I was one of the 1.44Million! :rockin:

Well and good, but Rogers is spending in excess of 138.5 million in salary for the Jays alone to reach that number vs the CFL’s half as good for 45 million league wide in salary. They are spending 3 times as much, for double the punch.

That also said, more games and bigger gates might also be helping make that salary more palatable.

All of Canada follow the Blue Jays, I’ve gone to Seattle and you would think it’s a HOME game, way more jays fans than mariners, this is because all the fans from Vancouver are driving to the Seattle, not fans from Toronto.

Thank you sir. Not to mention they have a lot of fans out east aswell.

The Jays crushed it ratings - wise over the weekend - while the Cats blowout over the Lions was the top rated CFL game.

The Lions - Ti-Cats game drew 592,000 viewers. Not bad for a blowout.

Hot on the heels of that - the other blowout that night - 563,000 for Redblacks - Stamps. Not that bad for a 10PM ET starting game that was over on the scoreboard before halftime.

The Friday night Argos - Bombers game - had the unfortunate time slot of not only the week but of the season thus far as it went up against the Yankees - Jays record setting night on Sportsnet. The Baseball game averaging over 2,000,000 with audience peaking late in the Jays game at over 3,000,000. Highest ratings EVER for any program on Sportsnet. As a result the CFL audience came in at just 485,000 for that one. Again not terrible when you consider what it was up against.

up to 3million is impressive i guess… Call me when their numbers hit 5- 6 million than i’ll be impressed

Hope hell has the room for all these souls. I cant even say some of them will be saved because they were watching the other team…it was the freaking Yankees! Their fans signed away their souls during the late 90’s

Anyone else see the amount of Jays gear at the Ticats games? I can almost understand wearing a hat but wearing a hat and BlowJays jersey?? Whats the point!! Hell why not go the full monty and bring a baseball glove too!! Give your heads a shake people.

521,000 for the Esks - Cats game Friday night. Kind of disappointing considering the hype for the game. Riders - Stamps got a very good 782,000 (by avoiding the Jays for 2 of the 3 hour time slot) and the Argos - Redblacks game decimated by the Jays - even lost to golf in the same time slot - getting only 324,000 viewers.

As if the Toronto Argonauts didn't have enough things to worry about, they're now taking a serious beating at the gate and on TV thanks to their baseball-playing roommates.

The Toronto Blue Jays are on a major roll both on the field and on the TV people meters, and the poor Argos have become collateral damage. The Argos hit frightening lows in both ticket sales and ratings on the weekend, and there’s little doubt the Jays have to accept a large part of the blame.

With the Jays sucking up all the sports oxygen in Toronto, the Argos drew a paltry 14,748 paying customers for Sunday’s game against the Ottawa Redblacks – the smallest crowd they’ve drawn in Toronto since 2003.

And going head-to-head against the Jays on TV didn’t help, either. Sunday’s game averaged only 324,000 viewers – barely half of last year’s season average and one of the lowest CFL numbers in recent memory. The Jays drew an average of 1.2 million viewers that afternoon, which no doubt accounted for a good portion of the low number for the Argos’ win over Ottawa.

Yes, it was the kind of Sunday afternoon in the Toronto area that keeps people outdoors. But 1.2 million managed to flee the sun and surf to watch the Jays pummel the Angels, so that really wasn’t a huge factor. If people are engaged, they’ll find a way to watch the game regardless of the other distractions.

It should be considered an embarrassment to the Argos and the CFL that the game finished behind the PGA Wyndham Championship, hardly a major tournament.

At this point, it does appear to be a Southern Ontario thing. The Calgary-Saskatchewan game basically went head-to-head with the Jays on Saturday night and impressively attracted 782,000 viewers. Friday’s Hamilton-Edmonton game also pulled in a decent audience of 521,000 despite starting only an hour before the Jays did.

What’s even sadder for the Argos is that the game with Ottawa was a pretty entertaining one that went down to the final seconds. That means providing drama and entertainment isn’t enough to draw a crowd – neither in person or on television. (Ottawa plays a role in this, too, but at least the second-year Redblacks are drawing fans to their stadium.)

Sunday’s game might have been a blip, but with NHL training camps not far off and baseball playoffs looming, things could get worse for the Argos. While that may seem like a Toronto problem, the fact is that it could affect the entire league.

Most of the ad agencies that fuel the TV rights escalation are located in Toronto. If the Argos, and thus the CFL, become irrelevant in Toronto it’s only a matter of time before the ad buyers start losing interest.

Easily explained.

All of Hamilton watched the Ticats cuz we rock! except T-Pat he wants to spend eternity in hell
Edmontonians, Edmontonees, Edmontoners (?) didn't watch cuz they new a BEATDOWN was coming.

The rest of Canada didn't watch cuz they are jealous of our team.

And LOL at the Belgian grand prix almost having as many eyes watching as the Arhols game did.

Can’t wait for the excuses! I’ll start

The Jays were playing.
Everyone was at the EX
Too nice outside to waste staying indoors (unlike those fat lazy slobs that sat around watching the Jays play)
Couldn’t find the TV remote to change channel (which explains the high numbers for Begian grand prix lol)
To busy trimming my metro-man beard.
Carry on…

LOL. I came out of the fires of Blue Jays hell for that night and did watch the Cats game Ryan - only checking in on the Jays during halftime and commercial breaks.

I’m enjoying the heat of hell though - the Jays are hot. (just like our Cats)

and how many in Toronto actually watched the Argo game? we can only guess.
The total of 324,000 would be the “hard core” CFL fans from all of the CFL cities that watch every CFL game. My guess is that there are around 50k viewers from each CFL city that watch every game but I bet even less than 50k in Toronto watched the Argos game.

sweet

that’s equal to about 10 hail Mary’s in my book
