2005 Calgary Stampeders

Just making the first post in the Stampeder forum. It looks like a great year for the red and white, I expect them to finish no lower then third in the West. Most fans of other teams think Stamps fans are stupid because we “only signed Burris and Copeland and they are our saviours”, but that’s hardly the case. We believe they will do well and are two very important pieces of the puzzle, but not “saviours” by any means. Remember football is a team game, and that is exactly what the Stampeders are building: A team. They have the defense still intact which would have lead the league last season if not for a horrid offensive attack, with the addition of DB Anthony Marlbough. The offense has been highly upgraded with Burris at QB, and Copeland adds a lot of depth at the receiver position. We should also get a full year our of runningback Joffery Reynolds, whom in five games last season ran for nearly 500 yards with a 5.5 average and two touchdowns, behind a banged up offensive line and a pass happy offense. The coaching staff is solid and highly experienced. They have made some excellent moves this off season and figure to continue making the team better as the off season rolls along. New ownership is perhaps the biggest, the brightest change for the Stampeder organization, who finally rid themselves of California Businessman Micheal Feterik. The new owners consist of local businessman, and the Calgary Flames who own a 5% take in the team. This will help both the Flames and Stamps out greatly, with cross-promotion.

Go Stamps Go! Re-Building a once proud franchise!

I agree with everything red’00 wrote, this will be a great season for the Stamps, the new ownership group has done a great job of re-building the team, really looking forward to seeing the Stamps play, can’t wait for the season to start.

Can’t wait for the season to start!

yeehaa brothers, weez goin to the promised land!

Finally a site where we can talk stamps football nice!

http://www.gostampsgo.com has a pretty big following of stamps fans just FYI.

I “promise” you’ll finish beind the Riders,Lions, Eskies!

I love my 'Cats, but lets be serious. If Copeland and Lewis don’t catch everything thrown at them this year, Reynolds is going to run the ball down eveyones throat.

Riders fans may hate Burris for what he did (what ever that is) but come on, the Stamps will finish first or second.

What are some areas that need to be looked at?

I think they should continue to improve on their offensive line last year it blew!!!

then how come back in the huddle, every one was so high on your o-line. thats confusing

I think your mistaking offensive line with the defensive line. Calgary’s defense was awesome last year regardless of the season Stamps d was top of the line if the offense could have got it together the season would have been much better. I thought the line was weak and the QB’s had no time to set up the play. I know last year Calgary’s top pick was an offensive lineman but I think he went down to Green Bay. I know the pick was a gamble not sure how much he played last year.

The offensive line is okay but lacks depth. They were 2nd in sacks allowed and this with no running game for three quarters of the season. It is much harder for offensive lineman to be in a passing formation every play.
These are areas I think need to be addressed:

  1. Depth on offensive line
  2. Safety - L Deck may make it there but who is to say. A rookie would not help at this time.
  3. Receiver- M Juhasz 2nd year he will pick it up a notch and Blake Machan if he plays like he did for the Dinosaurs and is over his injury this problem may be solved.
  4. Pick Lumsden because he is the best player available. Could use him for trade bait later if things do not work out. At this time the pick is not worth giving up a good player for by other teams.
The draft is weak this year.

Ya, the stamps are going to kick butt this year. They will have good WR’s with Lexis and Copeland and Burris will complete the offence. GO STMAPS

The Calgary Stampeders’ Senior Vice-President of Football Operations/Head Coach, Tom Higgins, announced the free agent signing of Defensive Back Nashville Dyer and Linebacker/Defensive Back Trey Young. As per Club policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed. Dyer enters his first season with the Calgary Stampeders and was previously signed as an undrafted free agent by the Pittsburgh Steelers on April 28, 2003 before being allocated to Amsterdam Admirals in 2004. He recorded 15 tackles, three pass knockdowns and one interception with the Amsterdam Admirals in NFL Europe and the team finished the season with a 5-5 record. Thought I would make fun of the Eskie’s here! Which coaching staff would you sooner have as a Stamp fan. The Eskie’s coaching staff or the Stamps!
I believe Edmonton is going the direction Calgary went with Dunigan with their new coaching Staff. Where as Calgarys coaching staff are proven coaches. Yes you will here the Eskie fans bashing Higgens but again all coaches are jerks when they lose like they did last year to the Riders of all teams. I think with the new staff of the Eskies this will put their streak in jeopardy espically with RD Lancaster coaching the offense. Then the real thing is defense by committee. How is this accomplished do they vote on plays. I also heard the Hughies son will be a defensive coach in some compacity ( Smacks of F troop).
I look at The Stamps staff Higgens has won a GC and put Edmonton into the finals and also Steve Baratto has also a cup ring, Denny Crehan well look at the defense he built etc. I think this speaks for itself. Wow a team with good coaches and replaced the driftwood players with guys that can play.

For a team to gel quicker I would sooner have an experienced coaching staff then a band aide staff the Eskies have. I guess we just have to see and for sure Calgary has improved the coaching 100 fold. I think the Stamps will be either in position of second or third place depending on the team getting their offense going and injuries. IMO.

they need to try to trade it away and get a kicker CANADIAN kicker who does both, perferably young. Maybe the kid from Hamilton, he does both and they have 2 signed already maybe the Ticats want to move one for their home town boy Lumsden? Maybe the guy in Montreal he has killed us the last few years and I think he has goten over the jinx of BC, his name escapes me.

I think you will see them take Lumsden, yes I forgot about a canadian kicker. Some may become available after training camp. Or one will be available later in the draft. But when you have first over all you grab the best palyer available. If you need to trade later once this fellow has played then his stock might get you someone to fill a position of need. But I do not believe anyone will trade anything of value for Lumsden at this time.

Take Care

The Calgary Stampeders quietly continue to revamp their roster.

After holding a free-agent camp earlier this week at McMahon Stadium, the Stamps are set to introduce at least four new players with National Football League experience.

The most notable is quarterback Giovanni Carmazzi, a third-round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2000. Others include receivers Ken-Yon Rambo and Tywan Mitchell and linebacker Cornelius Anthony.

Carmazzi joins Henry Burris, Darnell Kennedy and Michael Souza on the Stamps’ quarterback depth chart. He came highly recommended by Stamps offensive co-ordinator Steve Buratto, who coached him last season with the B.C. Lions.

“He has a great upside,” said Buratto. “He has wonderful athletic skills, he can run like mad. He has plenty good enough arm strength. He’s a tireless worker and he’s very dedicated to the game.”

Carmazzi, 28, spent two seasons with the Niners and one in NFL-Europe, but his career was sidetracked by nerve damage to his throwing arm. He tried out for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2003 before coming to the CFL.

B.C.'s quarterback wealth made Carmazzi expendable this off-season.

“Last year was good just to start playing football again,” said Carmazzi. "You’d like to be the starter, or whatever. But in reality, when you haven’t played football for three years, you just want to get back at it, knock some of that rust off and start being a football player again. That’s what last year was and hopefully I’ll make some strides.

“Obviously, Henry’s the No. 1 guy here and the backup situation will unfold as the season goes along. I’m just here to compete, have fun and contribute in any way I possibly can.”

Rambo was the most eye-catching talent at Calgary’s free-agent camp and hasn’t signed a contract yet. The Stamps plan on locking him up soon.

Rambo was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the seventh round of the 2001 NFL lottery. He spent two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and parts of two seasons with the New York Jets.

The former blue-chip prospect has 17 career NFL receptions and, despite obvious physical talents, has been inconsistent as a pro.

Mitchell is a six-foot-five, 250-pound specimen, who spent two years with the Arizona Cardinals and one with the Detroit Lions. He had 25 catches for the Cards in 2001.

Anthony had stints with the Washington Redskins, Denver Broncos, San Francisco 49ers and with the Barcelona Dragons in NFL Europe.

“With this camp, we were able to sign guys from our neg list that we’ve been looking at,” said Stamps general manager Jim Barker. "It was great to put these players in a CFL setting and see how they adapted.

“It was also a great opportunity for our coaches to work together. This was the same type of camp we’ll be having in Pittsburgh on the 30th (of May) and April 1 in Newark.”

The Stamps also released import offensive tackle Seth Dittman, a CFL West Division all-star last season. After trying to trade the 32-year-old and finding no takers, they recently let him go.

“In fairness to Seth, we’re going to play an all-Canadian offensive line and we wanted to give him a chance to catch on somewhere else,” said Barker.

Time is 4:47 on Wednesday afternoon and I am going on the record to claim that we will select Chris Best, OL form Duke as the #1 pick. Local boy (Western Canada High) and making heads turn. We’ll pass on Lumsden…no one is really interested in trading…
