1 training camp battle to watch for every team

As training camps open across this great country, many players know where they stand as stars and starters.

QB for Montreal? Again, Marshall? This is like the fourth time he’s tried to make a story out of MBT possibly usurping Alexander at QB1. Here he is trotting it out again with no evidence to support it. Feels lazy and borderline personal.

WPG have one extra per-season game, it looks like
Riders OL choices are limited as mentioned. Lets see any new signing along with the draft picks.

WPG plays 2 games like everyone else.

Riders inked close to 40 Oline prior to rookie camp. Additionally the backups got plenty of development time last season. I think the writer is just looking for something to nitpick about regarding the Riders. He is now in “what if” territory. So lets play. What if the bombers or Argos lose their top two qbs to injury early in the season? They miss the playoffs. See how that works?

I didn’t read it that way. He said the starters feel fairly established. Backups probably need some sorting out.

this is a team that started 16 different o lineman last year due to a freakish amount of injuries. Riders scouting and signing have been unbelievable good. I’ve been a hardcore critic of the Riders porous o line the previous couple years but after last year I’m on board with whatever Oday and his staff are doing.

My biggest question is how does Jake Maier play of Harris goes down?

That has to be an big exaggeration, right? 40 Olinemen??

I honestly think Streveler will be the odd man out. With Collaros nearing the end of his career the Bombers need to find a succession. I think the team goes with Wilson and Patterson.

I think he meant with Collaros out for game one the Bombers might treat the season opener like a preseason game to see which QB responds to a regular season game. I also wonder if that means all of Wilson, Streveler, and Patterson make it through training camp?

I’d have to think they will carry 4 with 1 on the PR. Of course they’re open to be poached by anyone there so, after game 1, who goes there is anyone’s guess. The likelihood of any of them being poached is slim IMO unless injuries come up later in the season.

Just north of slightly. Seemed like it but it was over 20 for sure.

Well…there goes Patterson.

I was surprised by this move.

i’m not. Patterson had his limitations and it showed in Sask.

Suppose the training camp battle to watch in Saskie is once again the Oline lol. Can’t help but laugh.

Wonder if they’d consider going 4 import Oline. Really think we have the players to make it work. 2 secondary, 1 Dline or LB, 3 Wr and 1 Oline. Use the DA effectively.

You need 8 starting nationals, though. Would be extremely hard for any team to go 4 Americans on the O-line.

Or 7 plus a DNA which what i meant earlier when i said to use the DA effectively. The nationalized American can sub any American all game and sub for a designated national for up to 25 snaps. Believe we could handle the 7 nationals and we have a bunch of Americans that we could use as a DNA.

Right, although the DNA substitution clause isn’t exactly the same as the NA starter.

Nationalized American players are defined as having played with their current team for 3 years or at least 5 years in the League. One Nationalized American player may be listed as one of the eight National starters.

So yes, the eighth starter can be a nationalized American. A designated nationalized American is a guy who fits the NA criteria but who can come in and replace a designated national for up to 25 snaps after the first play on his side of the ball:

Designated Nationalized Americans replacing Designated National Players for up to 25 Snaps

The other thing about that eighth starter being a NA is you have to make sure his backup is a Canadian of some quality. Otherwise you’re fielding a scrub if he gets injured, which can lead to subpar on-field results, or you have to make ratio changes elsewhere on your roster to compensate.

Generally, if you’re starting 4 American OL, you had better make sure your national starters are good players and not average guys filling a starter role by passport. If not, it’s a zero sum game where the benefits you net on the O-line are negated by losses you suffer elsewhere on the roster.

I don’t think any team in the league has deep enough Canadian talent to start four American OL. Even starting 3 American OL presents a ratio challenge.

There is no rule that says you have to use the DNA for 25 snaps. If he gets hurt then you would have to carry on with the 7 Nationals. In our case baring injury, we could easily go 2 national Oline and a DNA to sub with one of those as well as any of the American Oline. Apparently we have a Dline player that enjoys the odd Oline snap if we are pressed hard enough.
