Ed Hervey congédié?

by LeStaf » Fri Apr 07, 2017 11:14 am

That's not going to happen here. Hervey is going to sit on his money for a while. It think he has two full years left on his GM contract. At some point I could see Popp hiring him.

Edmonton has had decent success under Ed

EDM 2013 4 14 0 .222 4th Failed to Qualify
EDM 2014 12 6 0 .666 2nd Lost in West Final
EDM 2015 14 4 0 .777 1st Won Grey Cup
EDM 2016 10 8 0 .555 3rd Lost in West Semi-Final

With last season coming after a coaching staff overhaul thanks to Jones jumping ship shortly after the Grey Cup win.

There must be a story behind this as it isn't certainly doesn't seem like a football decision at this time of year.

Sean Fleming probably summed it up best in the other Esks forum:

Let's be clear, this move was strictly all about Rhodes' ego and the negotiations to extend Ed's contract which were initiated by the organization.

- Ed was looking to be paid market rate for GMs in the league, which is a reasonable ask, given his success and how he handled the staff exodus last season. Rhodes took issue with that since it would mean Ed would be making more than Rhodes, a point he raised with Ed.
- Ed was looking for a bump up in title to President of Football Operations. That didn't sit well with Rhodes.
- Rhodes didn't like the fact that Terry Jones was publically calling Rhodes weak by stating that football ops was running the show in Edmonton and across the league.

In the meantime, attendance continues to drop under Rhodes' leadership on the business side. This coming from a guy who brought you the concert series with Vanilla Ice as a way to increase attendance. To blame that on Ed when he is putting a winning product on the field is an attempt to pass the buck.

All the rest of the excuses Rhodes is trying to peddle is just an attempt to backfill. Why enter into negotiations to extend if you have been looking to replace him since January? A total contradiction.

To be fair, Fleming was a candidate against Rhodes for Eskimos President.

My guess is the BOD wanted Ed extended and Rhodes found a way to scuttle negotiations.

From the Esks play by play guy:

Morley Scott‏ @Morley_Scott 15h15 hours ago

As per #CFL, #Esks can talk with other teams employees re GM job but must have written permission from both the team and the Commissioner

So I guess there is no Jan. 31 deadline after all.

Not the most flattering portrait of Ed Hervey:

Must really drive fired employees nuts that they can never tell their side of things if they ever want their contract paid out.

That said, there were always rumors in Edmonton about how difficult Hervey was to work with. He's a tough guy straight outta Compton who no doubt learned a lesson here about corporate survival in a city like Edmonton.

A more logical candidate:

And whatever happened to that off-season Jan. 31 deadline for interviewing other teams personnel? They`ve interviewed O`Day and now Sunderland less than 3 weeks before the draft.

Given the history between Ottawa-Edmonton over Maas I don't see the Communist-AfricanAmericans giving permission.

Ottawa is going to charge Rhodes hefty compensation...
