the number 1 pick for NFL does it really make a difference

2007 JaMarcus Russell – warming the bench
2006 Mario Williams - coming into his own
2005 Alex Smith – average at best
2004 Eli Manning – coming into his own
2003 Carson Palmer – legitimate star
2002 David Carr - Average at best
2001 Michael Vick – legitimate star
2000 Courtney Brown - where is he now
1999 Tim Couch - playing in the CFL
1998 Peyton Manning – legitimate star
1997 Orlando Pace - still playing
1996 Keyshawn Johnson – legitimate star
quote to come later...

If you compare Bauman to a first year import out of university, then yes, he matches up quite well. In fact I would say more often than not, Canadian kids match up very well with US kids when they are both just out of university and playing in the CFL.

Where things stand now since this post ...
note that a whole of money is spent and risked for about 50% odds of having a star player with such a pick ...
even so few teams will trade this pick down as do teams with other high picks in the first round...

2010 Sam Bradford -- Likely Starter 2010
2009 Matt Stafford -- Starting QB still on learning curve
2008 Jake Long -- 2 Years 2 Pro Bowls And Star; Set For HOF Career Barring Injury

Future Hall of Famer:
1998 Peyton Manning

Stars/Former Stars:
1996 Keyshawn Johnson
1997 Orlando Pace
2003 Carson Palmer
2004 Eli Manning
2008 Jake Long

Current Or Former Feature Players:
2006 Mario Williams
2001 Michael Vick

Underwhelming & Highly Overrated When Picked:
1999 Tim Couch
2002 David Carr
2005 Alex Smith

Bust:
2007 JaMarcus Russell
2000 Courtney Brown
