Yikes! It's a long summer and that's not much. Hopefully, there will be some surprise goodies.

Kevin,

Aren't several of these of the Sci-Fi genre? I thought you had a serious dislike for Sci-Fi.

Beggars can't be choosers. It's slim pickins this summer.

The Windmill (2016) :

A bus load of tourists visit the Windmills of Holland. On this happy bus we find a :

* Soldier who kills prostitutes;
* Psychotic cutey with daddy issues;
* Japanese boy who abandoned his grandmother;
* Misogynistic business man and his hemophiliac son;
* Surgeon who operates under the influence;
* Soulless French actress with a temper - hopefully the beautiful Juliette Binoche is not her rival.

They all meet Death, scepter and all. And you thought you've had bad vacations.

One of the worst horror movies I've ever seen but, sadly, just typical fare from Netflix Canada.

1/10

The Stepfather (2009) :

Dylan Walsh plays David Harris, a serial killer who moves from family to family, slaughtering them when he's outstayed his welcome. The movie is a remake of the 1987 classic (too strong a word) starring Terry O'Quinn. The 1987 version was scarier and more believable - before the internet and shows like America Most Wanted. This version is just a bunch of small jumps, endless close calls, and red herrings.

I haven't seen the original in 30 years but, even if it hasn't aged well, it's still better than this unwanted house guest of a movie.

Only the beautiful Amber Heard makes an impression.

Still no reviews for Snatched. Keeping a movie from the critics until it opens, is usually a bad sign... :thdn:

The funniest thing about that trailer, is that the hobo character looks like Jeff Reinebold! :lol: :lol: :lol:

Equity (2016) :

Naomi Bishop (Anna Gunn) is an Investment Banker who is only as good as her last IPO. Unfortunately, her last IPO went bad and now she's trying to prove she can still do it. Angling to get their share is her scumbag boyfriend, her back stabbing assistant, and her Prosecutor friend, who just happens to be investigating Naomi and her firm.

Equity is a smart, feminist version of Wall Street. However, it's not without its faults...

* Some characters are a little too quirky, like the boss who likes to play Jenga on his desk;
* Blocks of dialogue sound (slightly) plagiarized - Naomi demanding a cookie with more chocolate chips felt a little too much like the blueberry muffin scene from Casino;
* The final 30 minutes aren't as good as the 70 minutes that proceeded it;
* Equity is not in the same league as the far superior Margin Call.

Still, the movie pulled me in and the conclusion felt authentic.

No where near the talent of a Martin Scorsese but...

Silence Of The Lambs director Jonathan Demme dead at 73

Silence Of The Lambs is painful overrated, but Something Wild is a classic. Hit and miss director but, again, still a talent.

A Patch Of Fog (2015) :

Sandy Duffy is a kleptomaniac. He's also a wealthy writer, so he doesn't need to steal, but he needs the rush to feel alive. One day he gets caught and, to buy his freedom, he makes a deal with, well, not the Devil, but with the Devil's pain-in-the-ass little brother, Robert. You see, Robert is a pest, and a scary/dangerous/vindictive one at that, and he makes Sandy's life unbearable, eventually, literally, dragging him to Hell.

A Patch Of Fog is a clever, interesting twist on the story of the painfully needy friend, who enters your life, but then refuses to leave. Think of a darker Irish version of The Cable Guy.

As for poor Sandy's fate? Well, they say everyone has one good book in them... and Sandy Duffy had one... didn't he?

Source Code (2011) :

Ironically, before the beginning of every alternate timeline movie, I`m able to see 2 hours into the future...

I know the movie will start off strong, the characters will be unique, there will be a mystery to be solved, and the protagonist will be sent back in time, over and over again, until he/she completes the puzzle. I also know that, in the end, the movie will disappoint with a dumb timeline twist that makes little/no sense, but gives young geeks something to talk about on the way out of the theater.

Unfortunately, Source Code followed the path I predicted. Fortunately, it's better than most, and the beautiful Michelle Monaghan is along for the (train) ride.

Denial (2016) :

Denial is a historical drama about the libel case between Deborah Lipstadt, an American professor of Holocaust studies, and David Irving, a Holocaust denier.

Both Rachel Weisz performance of Lipstadt, and the movie itself, are uneven. Both are weak in hour one. Both excel in hour two.

If Denial had spent more time depicting the trial, which was the most interesting part of the movie, it would have rated higher.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) :

With all the inside jokes, winking at the audience, and references to the 70's/80's, one of these times the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise will fail. Thankfully, it wasn't this time.

GOTG2 lacks suspense (we know they will all survive), originality (we've seen it all before), and it's way too long (2h 18m), but it's still more fun, and cuter, than a barrel full of Baby Groots...

Under the category of `I knew it!`, the reviews for Snatched are BAD. As I said, whenever they won`t let the critics preview a movie, it`s because the executives have seen it and know it`s a dog. Speaking of dogs...

I knew it would be bad when I saw the commercial/trailer - which usually includes the BEST parts of a movie. In it :

Goldie Hawn gives Amy Schumer a `Rape Whistle`. Instead, it`s a Dog Whistle. A.S. blows it and a dog appears at the window.

Seriously? A 10 year old could write something more cutting edge/funnier.

Too bad because I like Amy Schumer.
