I Saw The Devil (2010) :

I've never been to South Korea but their law enforcement must be beyond incompetent because, in every Korean movie, the police are stupid, lazy and substandard in every way. The country also seems to have more than its share of serial killers. I Saw The Devil fails to break that mold but, to its credit, it has an ingenious plot.

A secret agent's wife is killed by a serial killer and the agent wants revenge. But, instead of just finding and killing the maniac, he finds him, he tortures him, and he let's him go. Then he does it again... and again... and again. The serial killer grows tired of the cat and mouse game, and exacts a little revenge of his own.

The whole thing is tied together with excessive violence, with a little cannibalism thrown in for good measure.

The movie does have its saving graces. The characters are terrific, the two leads are fantastic, and the direction is strong. The problem is how far they take the craziness because the secret agent and the serial killer have a super hero quality to them - they are both capable of amazing feats of strength, have unbelievable pain tolerance, and they are able to easily avoid detection by the authorities. So, in the end, we are left with a good super hero, versus an evil super hero, fighting it out while the Korean Keystone Cops watch and innocent people die violently.

I Saw The Devil is a mix of Kill Bill and Taken, and has a Quentin Tarantino-esk quality to it. Unfortunately, it lacks the wit and finesse of Kill Bill, and we are left, all too often, with the blunt, humourless brutality of Taken.

6/10

Despite being offended by your insulting speciesism, I couldn't help but laugh. Apparently you and I both have learned nothing from these cautionary films.

Too bad it's only a 6. I was looking forward to this one.....will still probably check it out though.

First hour and a half DRAGS... Too many warm moments. Few laughs. 6 is being generous.

Train to Busan (2016) :

South Korea is overrun by zombies. A man and his little daughter are on a train during the infection. An infected woman gets on the train and all hell breaks loose.

The special effects are terrific, the zombies are fast(!), and the pace of the movie keeps you breathless. Train to Busan may be the best zombie movie I've ever seen.

Now on Netflix Canada.

A Tale Of Two Sisters (2003) :

A Tale Of Two Sisters opens with a teenage girl (Su-mi) being questioned by a psychiatrist in a mental institution. Dark hair covers her face as she sits stoically, refusing to answer. The movie then shows Su-Mi and her younger sister, Su-yeon, returning home. Their evil stepmother greets them at the door and we fear for the girls, knowing they have just stepped into a house of horrors.

For the next 2 hours, Su-Mi and her step mother fight each other and the house that haunts them. All the while, the father stands idly by. His passivity and lack of emotion is frustrating because we want answers. Instead, the movie just adds more and more levels of terror.

A Tale Of Two Sisters is like an onion. As we peel back each layer, something is revealed about the daughters and their step mother. The tension builds, the horror mounts, and the viewer is left feeling a) scared, b) exhausted, c) that the director is cheating because less and less makes sense.

The last 15 minutes is really confusing, so I had a choice. I could either re-watch the movie, and hope that a second viewing helped, or I could watch a breakdown of the movie on YouTube. I chose the latter and once I saw the explanation, everything made sense - it also helped me appreciate the depth of the characters and the story.

So, if you like to be scared, I can't recommend A Tale Of Two Sisters enough. It's a psychological horror that makes you thankful for a film that is willing to be something more than just a blood and guts slasher. And, when it's done, if you need YouTube to fill in the blanks, that's okay too. It happens to the best of us!

8.5/10

Language is Korean with English Subtitles.
