I don't see how she has any legal grounds as it was never ruled a touchdown to begin with and referee errors are part of the game in any sport.

Otherwise, teams can sue leagues when official errors cost their teams championships, playoff berths etc...

Exactly. They're using to create some positive attention from what could be viewed through a bitter lens.

The Argos should step up and give her 5,000 seasons tickets. :D

Wendy's was probably the ones who paid off the officials to blow a call in these situations so they aren't out a million bucks.

She could be Canada's next big thing.

Remember Rider fan Dick Assman from Regina ?

Got famous and ended up on Letterman.

Hey, perhaps that Prime Minister Golden Boy that Eastern Canada voted in could give her $ 1 M , and give the terrorist traitor only 9.5 M.

I think you are just joking, but if not , .... if they were not willing to pay the $$$, they would not be involved in the deal in the first place.

I suppose the consolation package put forward to Karen today is a product of our times. Social media is both a threat to and opportunity for corporate reputations, so it's no surprise there would be a response to the outcry. I compare Karen's situation (supposed bad ref call, but could also be considered a legit infraction) to a situation a few years ago when the "Kick to Win" program was about to deliver on $1M for some fan when a second KR in the game was heading for the end zone. And then....Lui Passaglia, the last man back, tripped the returner. It was blatant. But nobody at TSN said anything, and it was before Twitter was a big thing. There was no outcry on behalf of the aggrieved fan...and there was no consolation prize for that poor shmo who was just one foot (Lui's foot, actually) away from a cool million.
By the way Lui....I hope you never meet the fan walking down the street. They'd be justified in tripping you so you landed on your chin. Woops...forgot...you don't really have a chin.

LOL !!! Wendy's actually paid out on their million dollar kick to win contest back in 2005 when a fan named Brian Diesbourg actually hammered one through from 50 yds out at a game in Toronto.

The catch though was Diesbourg wasn't paid his million in one cheque BUT does get $25,000 a year for the next 40 yrs .
Fortunately also for him unlike poor Karen there was no dingbat official involved at halftime to throw a flag and screw him out of his prize when his kick went thru the uprights .

Call was a travesty, however it technically was correct despite being a call I'm sure the CFL wishes wasn't called due to the almost complete lack of significant contact. Bombers offer an olive branch to support a Bomber fan, Sobeys offers an olive branch as a PR move and the league offers an olive branch to make up for a cheap call without having to actually admit fault with the call or hang the official out for making it.

Karen doesn't get the million, which she is not entitled to because of the technically correct weak flag, but she does get something and all parties look good except the official who made the weak call who gets forgotten in all the feel good PR. As close as you'll get to a win-win on this one.

With what the CFL and it's sponsors gave her (including the $25,000 home theatre package) - she was up to over $40,000 worth of stuff and now even Air Miles have kicked in with 500,000 Air Miles - supposedly worth $50,000 so she's up to over $90,000 worth of stuff. Not too bad - but not a million bucks.

She seems like a nice lady. There is a video at this link of an interview with her from CBC..

The contest is just advertising for Sobeys/Safeway so if they don't kick in somehow everything they've put into this contest has gone to create bad press for them.

Non story now, bad call hopefully discussed with the official by supervisors, everyone and their uncle has given her a little extra, time to move on.
