He's packing heat. So the commish needs to be someone who shows up to Board of Governors meetings with an automatic weapon.....actually come to think it, that may be just what the position needs

She is vice president of marketing and promotion for MLSE but does that qualify her as a commish?
She would make a great head of marketing and promotion for the CFL.

Just what the league wants in a commish is the million-dollar question. If I were on the BOG, I think what I'd want is primarily a marketing and promotion person. But apparently each team prefers to do it's own regional marketing rather than to have a unified, national strategy, so I'm not sure what they're looking for in a commish.

What's also interesting about her marketing work is how involved the team president and GM levels are. That's interesting. And how big her team is. I was at a Raptor game this year and the vibe was amazing.

Personally I think marketing in the CFL is a responsibility that befalls the commish...not that they have to do it...but create an ability to get it done. But that takes dollars.

But if every team can increase fans by 1000 per game that is 5 mil league wide. But how that gets to the CFL for marketing is an issue. Maybe that's partly what a commish does.

I've often thought in Van ...if a large tent resty was set up outside the stadium...big screen...let people just go out and have a meal under the stars and watch it on TV ...and buy BBQ. Of course the local restys would scream. Get people excited about coming down. Pretty soon they may want to buy a ticket...

Someone with.....

1. Extensive knowledge of football in general and the Canadian game in particular and its history, development and place in Canadian Society and Culture. Someone who has played, coached and/or officiated to an elite level in Canada, but not necessarily CFL as NOT being paid to be in football is an honourable and desirable quality.
2. Extensive Marketing/Sales experience, preferably in Sports Marketing, Sponsorship and/or Broadcasting.
3. A deep understanding of the need for fan development, particularly among younger demographics to ensure a healthy future for the League
4. Further to point # 3, the candidate should display an intimate knowledge of social media, it's uses, implementation and opportunities.
5. Extensive Board Experience who understands the logistics of working with nine masters with different agendas and the ability to say "no" to these masters when the hill is worth dying on.
6. Charismatic and outgoing and willing to travel far and wide to market the game to fans, media and businesses alike.
7. The candidate must have thick skin.
8. Leadership abilities and a reasonable and achievable plan for the future...where will the League be in 10 years (read expansion!)?
9. The candidate does NOT have to be currently based in Toronto. Given Western Canadian Markets have long been the anchor of the League, a strong candidate from Alberta, Saskatchewan or Manitoba would be more than welcome.

This just screams Jim Hopson to me.

I totally agree that is the $1,000,000 question. In this day and age a Commissioner 's primary responsibilities are leading CBA negotiations and TV/Marketing programs; very little has to do with anything directly related to the on-field football product.

Well if that is how the league owners want to do business operating with a regional marketing strategy rather than a league national strategy, then it is up to the owners to find a commissioner who shares that vision and is able to work with that vision. Certainly takes the pressure off of the commissioner to try and have to develop a national type marketing and promotion strategy. :?

And she would leave the biggest Sports Entertainment company in Canada for a two to three year egg hunt with a bunch of senile old men ?
