What about Knight to d1, with Move 1, to cover b2...

IF White Queen takes Black Knight...

Black Queen takes White Queen on d1 (Move 2), threatening Mate on a4...

Sadly, White Rook to c2 prevents Mate on Move 3...

Last one...

Quiet move : Black King to b7...

Threatening...

and after White Bishop takes Black Pawn on b4...

Black Rook to a8, Mate++...

Unfortunately, b2 to b3 with White's first move, allows White to escape to b2 AGAIN...  :(

are you sure this is possible??
Crush cream soda is oh so good.  I think I'll have another

are you sure this is possible??
I am starting to wonder.  I found the puzzle on-line and it was categorized as the "Hardest Mate In 3 Ever".  I'd run it thru Fritz14 but there is no way to do it without seeing the answer.

I have a friend who will check for me, hopefully tomorrow, using an engine.

I will feel awful if I have wasted our time and there is no Mate in 3.  :)

Yes.  :)

Had a friend run it thru an Engine and the Engine said it was a Mate in 3 for Black so...

I/We will continue to search.

If anyone sees something I have analyzed, that is wrong, feel free to let me know.

What about a5 takes b4, Check+...

White plays Bishop takes b4 (forced)...

Black pawn to c3, cutting off b2...

White Queen takes c3...  and I can NOT find Mate with Black's 3rd move...

KevinRiley2

How about Knight to d1 (covering b2)...

Option 1)

White Queen takes d1...

... a5 takes b4, Check+

... White Bishop takes c3 (forced)...

...Black Queen takes b4, Mate++

***********************************************************

Option 2)

White plays b2 to b3 with its first move, leaving the Knight on d1...

... And is there a Mate in 2 above?

If there is, I don't see it.  :(

FootbalYouBet

I have pretty much given up on this one.  Maybe you could ask your friend to tell what the first move is.

If I can't figure it out by end of day Monday, Family Day, I will bite the bullet and let the computer tell us the answer.  :)

You know what Kev, this is too hard for me. I always forget something. If I had a board in front of me, I could play better. I have always been this way. I can read and write blueprints but if there is a problem there is nothing like firsthand. I am a hands-on type of guy.

Please make the problems easier. I think both FYB and I would appreciate it.

I am gonna get my board out and set it up and see if it helps.

Will do.  :)

************************************************************

I owe everyone an apology...

I found the puzzle above on-line, and it said Mate In 3.  But, according to engine Fritz-14, it is, in fact, a Mate In 4.  I am so sorry I wasted everyone's time.  Forgive me.  :(

Worse yet, I had someone run it thru an engine and they said it came back with Mate In 3.  I have no explanation.

Anyway...

Followed by...

We now have a Black to Move and Mate In 3.  Anyone want to give it a try?  It's not too difficult...

Again, I am sorry about the mix up.

FootbalYouBet

no problem kevin

Maybe the issue is that there is a 3 move mate, just not forced.  White has to co-operate

I saw at least one variation of mate in 4, but I have forgotten it now.  Have to take some time to think it all out again.
