Show me moves that black could make in my scenario that would make any difference.
If White plays e4 to e5, black will play Qf8, and it is no longer Mate in 5 (now 4).

According the Fritz14...

* White e4 to e5,
* Black Qd8 to Qf8,

prevents WQ to f6, and leaves White up 1.38 pawns / a forced Mate is no longer possible.

There is a forced combination of moves that Mates in 5.
Now you went and hurt my feelings. I haven't played in so long I'm still figuring out the alphanumeric placings.
Seriously, i didn't see anything that black could do. My fault. I will try to do better. Just quit picking on me. I can't take it.
Yikes, buddy.  That was not my intention.  Sorry!

As for your moves, I will break them down below...
I was just kidding. I thought you would know that by now and that hurts my feelings too. ;D

One last one for this week...

My game versus a player in Arizona.  Kevin/White mates in 5...

In the actual game, I Mated in 4.
so anyhow, back to this.  How does it go from here?

How about, wq to beside wb, check

in fact, as I look at it with my tired old brain, I see checkmate in 1,2,or 3 more moves depending on what black does.  Unless black sacrifices pieces, but then it would be a slaughter
Crush cream soda is oh so good.  I think I'll have another

There are people out there who just will not be happy until they have created sentient AI.

Yes, FYB, Q to d4 (Check +) is MOVE 1...

Okay...  We'll take this in 3 directions - Mate in 2, Mate in 5, and I will leave the trickier Mate in 4 for posters to solve.

Now...

White's King has 3 options available :

1) Kf8 - Scenario 1,
2) Re5 - Scenario 2,
3) Kh7, Scenario 3.

****************************************************************

Scenario 1 (Mate in 2) :

If Black's King moves to f8 (he can NOT move to f7, g8 or h8 - all of which leave him in Check+)...

White's Queen moves to h8 for a quick Mate(++).

*****************************************************************

Scenario 2 (Mate in 5 - best case scenario for Black) :

Black plays Rook to e5 to block the Check...

White's Queen takes the Black Rook, Check(+)...

Black Queen to f6 to block the Check...

White's Rook takes the Bishop, Check(+)...

Black King to f8 (because Kh8 Mates in 1)...

White Queen takes Black Queen, Check (+)...

Black's ONLY move is Ke8...

And White plays Qe7, Mate(++) - completing the Mate in 5...

KevinRiley2

That leaves Scenario 3 (the Mate in 4, (Mate in 3 after MOVE 1 Qd4+) and today's puzzle...

What if Black's King moved to h7 instead?...

How does White Mate in 3?

How does White Mate in 3?
I see mate in 2 at this point, unless I am missing something.
WR takes pawn, check.
BK has to take WR
WR puts black in checkmate

Sacrificing the Rook is correct, but it is a MATE IN 3...

Move 1) Rook takes the Pawn on h6, Check+...

Black's King is FORCED to take the Rook (no other move is available)...

Move 2) White Rook to h1, Check+...

Black Bishop to h3, blocking the Check...

Move 3) White's Rook takes the Black Bishop on h3, Mate++...

FootbalYouBet

yeah, forgot about the bishop

KevinRiley2

My opponent told me it was "pretty" sacrifice.  I agree.  :)

From the Magnus Carlsen vs. Sergey Karjakin World Championship, a Mate in 2...

White (Magnus) to move and MATE IN 2 :

Answer is on-line so NO cheating!!!  :)

P.S.  If you provide a move, you also need to explain how it Mates.

  wQ to h6
if black pawn takes queen next move wR f5 to f7- checkmate
if bK takes takes queen next move wR c8 to h8- checkmate

I'm sorry but i found this one easy.
I like this thread better than your movie thread Kevin. This is fun and makes me think.

Good man!

It was a brilliant Queen sacrifice by Magnus...

1) White Queen to h6, Check+

If...

A) Black King takes White Queen

2) White Rook to h8, Mate++

B) If the Black Pawn takes the White Queen on h7...

2) White Rook take the Pawn on f7, Mate++

Thanks, but I'm sure it will get old after a while.  ;)

How about an easy White to Mate in 3...

As usual, no cheating and please provide ALL 3 MOVES.  :)

queen sacrifice, check

if king takes queen then rook on row 8 puts it into checkmate.
if pawn takes queen then rook in row 5 takes pawn, checkmate

Everything gets old after a while. I remember back in the OLD days of newspapers when somewhere around the crossword they would have a daily chess problem. I loved them. Before i could afford a car, a bus ride to work or back home would seem to take seconds while I pondered the chess problems or the crossword. Sometimes I would miss my stop.
