Herb Zurkowsky just posted that DeVone Claybrooks is removing himself from consideration for the Als HC position.

3downnation had a story today that Tommy Condell interviewed on Thursday.

Before the Zurkowsky post, Davis Sanchez said on the Waggle yesterday that his belief is Mark Washington is the top HC candidate.

Mark Washington wouldn't be awful like a Marcel Bellefeuille. But, he would be a very ho hum hire for HC.

Probably the best this mess of an organisation can hope for right now.

There have been several persons that appeared to turn down the opportunity for the HC position. Will a legit prospect be coming our way? Washington was one of the best DHB players ever to play that position but, I don's see him as HC from his limited days in coaching at this point in time. Decent coaching persons don't appear to be lining up for our HC position. Meanwhile what efforts are being done to recruit new player additions for the Als?

I am expecting Mark Washington to become the Als new HC.  Kavis Reed's target date for the hiring is a week from now, and all the CFL candidates have been interviewed already.  Only way I see it not happening is if Andrew Wetenhall decides to go rouge and find somebody on his own.  If Washington does get hired, who are his buddies and/or what assistants are willing to work under him?

As far as player recruiting goes, I am going to predict that the Riders will hold more open tryouts over the next two weeks (4) than the Als will hold this entire off-season.

From Herb Zurkowsky:

Throughout the process, it was believed the two leading candidates were (Mark) Washington and Calgary defensive co-ordinator DeVone Claybrooks, but now there are mixed messages circulating throughout the league regarding Claybrooks. Some believe Claybrooks no longer remains a candidate, while others insist he’s still in the mix and shouldn’t be dismissed.

Indeed, it appears (Kavis)Reed doesn’t have anyone he’s leaning toward just yet, but will exhaust all avenues, knowing how critical the hire will be. He had said he wanted the new man introduced by the end of next week, although it now appears possible that deadline won’t be met.

It’s also believed, once Reed whittles his list down to three or four finalists, that group will travel to Montreal for a second round of talks, likely in the presence of owners Robert and/or Andrew Wetenhall.

Mike Benevides, Edmonton’s assistant head coach and defensive co-ordinator, told the Montreal Gazette days ago he hadn’t been interviewed and wasn’t anticipating one to take place. Corey Chamblin, who holds the same positions with the Argonauts, told the Montreal Gazette he had declined Reed’s request for an interview but provided no further details. Finally, Tom Clements, Green Bay’s former offensive co-ordinator and assistant head coach, no longer appears to be in the mix but was interviewed.

Washington, 44, was an Als defensive-back for six seasons before completing his career with a five-year stint in B.C. He retired to become the Lions’ DB coach in 2008 before being promoted.

He said he would have no inhibitions taking over a team that went 3-15 this season and has missed the playoffs three successive years.

Tommy Condell would be a great choice. He can put together an offense and make a QB productive both running and passing the ball. Als don't need another guy who lives 3000 miles away. That makes attracting and developing quarterbacks possible.

Bring in Stubbler to coach the defense.

Everything I write is just an opinion formed from various sources. Some more reliable than others, it is expressed as a composite of facts, innuendos, emotions, personal experiences and complete fabulation into a gumbo for entertainment purposes alone.

Apparently (according to Herb) the Alouettes' 2 favourite choices are Devone Claybrooks and Mark Washington.

Devone Claybrooks is a great candidate. It seems he does not want the job.

That leaves Washington. Washington has been a coach in the CFL for ten years; and DC for the last four. Only once in his four years as DC, have the Lions given up less than 400 points. They gave up more than 450 in his other three seasons. What exactly has he done to become a hot head coach prospect?

Washington was also interviewed by the Alouettes for the HC position in 2012. As far as Johnny knows, his name has not come up for any other CFL HC jobs. This is one of Reed's top candidates?!

It seems no one with any worthwhile credentials wants the job! Let's not kid ourselves about Chamblin! He refused the interview, because he does not want to waste what would be his last chance as a HC, with this sorry organisation. Candidates do not turn down an interview if they want a job (even if they think they are not the top candidate). These men are competitive. They do not wimp out because they are not the supposed front runner. They show up to the interview and tell themselves they will convince the team they are the best candidate.

It is truly sad that the Alouettes have to interview sad sack candidates like Marcel Bellefeuille, and have a ho hum candidate like Washington in their top two.

At this point, Condell would be a great HC hire. He will probably withdraw himself from the job as well...

and end up as the Lion's OC.

Als need to make a HC decision soon before BC takes whomever they consider is the best OC available.

Yup!  ::)

Watch Buono and Hervey in BC aggressively and quickly hire quality coaches. Reed will have to hire whoever is left...

Well, well...

It seems Jim Popp still has a certain touch to getting players and improving a team. He scored big by securing the rights to James Franklin.

Don't the Alouettes need a quality starting QB?! Kavis?

What was Reed doing while Popp hit this home run? Was Kavis matrixing his 10 point plan?

I believe Franklin remains a free agent despite  this trade. Meaning, Franklin continues as a free agent and, is eligible to sign with any team that wants his services.

Franklin only becomes a free agent next February 13th. Until then, he belongs to the Argos, and only the Argos can negotiate with him.
