Speedy was actually utilized to his strengths in the Jones offence. Austin had him sitting mostly on the sidelines wasting that ability on just kick returns which eventually every teams ST co-ordinater figured out how to cover.

Revision is fun.

When Matt Dunnigan said on national television Banks should only be used sparingly at receiver because his frame wouldnt take more punishment, then questioned Austin using him at all out of the backfield for the same reason.

There wasnt a single solitary peep of protest from anybody.

The lateral to Speedy B against Montreal was ridiculously fun and entertaining.

Yes Guy! I'm pretty sure even June Jones didn't draw it up like that.

Yeah, and then he went on one of the most amazing tears by any receiver ever.  Nearly a 1000 yards in just 10 games.  Nobody could have predicted that...well except for June Jones apparently...

Yeah, so how exactly would we all know if Speedy is durable or not at receiver when he wasn't being used. June Jones recognized the potential in both Banks and Masoli and it ended up working out. Blame Austin for being so rigid in his football philosophy and not recognizing and utilizing the weapons that he had under his nose.

Have to confess, I was among the doubters.  Saw Speedy primarily as a one route guy, straight fly pattern, and easy to defend with speed.  Also thought his pass catching skills were a bit iffy.  I certainly under-rated him.

ExPat

I don't remember too many people complaining when Speedy was averaging a TD every 4 or 5 games on returns.

Personally, I was always confused about how he was used on offence in the past couple of seasons.  They would give him reps, but almost exclusively for short passes and even runs - even though those plays never really amounted to much.  Also, the ball generally went to him whenever he went in for an offensive play, so the defence wasn't really surprised.  If you think the guy is good for, say, 10 plays in a game, make those plays count by taking advantage of him as a deep threat.  No one can run the sidelines more effectively than Speedy.

How has Adams looked?
Is it OK to mention his name on a Mazoli thread...?

Is Adams a third down QB sneak guy? Hope so....
What is Mazoli's nick name ....something with Italian food to do.....?

Adams had a couple short yardage opps against the Cats last year and he blew up real good.

Fine. But lets not pretend we all knew Austin wasnt using Banks properly all along.

If anything fans would be moaning why Austin was risking injury to  the teams best ST weapon.

Austin rigid in his philosopy but maybe for good reason.  I do hope that if Jones continues to use Speedy as a Receiver, that he stays healthy.  Jones just saw a fast guy and utilized him as he saw, as he knew per his US experiences.  Did he ever consider what Austin did and the ramifications?  Hopefully we never have to go there!

Yeah I'm sure the fans are sitting there thinking:

"We're losing by 3 points and it's late in the game and we're deep in our own end. We need to get up the field in a hurry but let's not use Speedy because he might get hurt and then he won't be available next game for that 7 yard punt return."

Might as well only watch golf then if we get to the point where we are treating football players with kid gloves.

Since this is All Things Jeremiah Masoli, seems like no better place to post this ...

Had the privilege & pleasure to have Jeremiah come out to work with the kids in Burlington Flag Football a couple times. What a true gentleman. So very humble. So polite. Not full of bluster or full of himself. Quite the opposite. Just a real down to earth guy.

Have also bumped into him in social settings in Burlington. He's the same person he is on camera in interviews as he is in public. Almost painfully polite. Always "Thank-you sir. Appreciate that mam. That's very kind ..."

I'm not a "raw-raw" kind of fan and generally do not fall in lobe with players since I understand the harsh realities of the business.

But Jeremiah is a young man worth cheering for in my humble opinion. Quality person.

Grover

Time for some more Masoli love
